Chargers Sign Versatile RB Dexter McCluster

Presenting your 2016 San Diego Chargers.

The San Diego Chargers have signed versatile veteran running back Dexter McCluster after losing Danny Woodhead to a season-ending knee injury.

To make room, the team waived wide receiver Isaiah Burse.

Last season, McCluster became the first player since Darren Sproles in 2011 to record at least 200 yards as a rusher, receiver, kickoff returner and punt returner in a season.

A 5-8, 170-pound product out of Mississippi, McCluster enters his seventh NFL season after spending his first four in Kansas City and last two with the Tennessee Titans.  He's appeared in 83 games, carrying the ball 247 times for 1,040 yards (4.2 ypc) and three touchdowns plus 229 receptions for 1,957 yards and seven TDs.  The veteran has also returned 125 punts for 1,331 yards (10.6 average) and three touchdowns as well as 65 kickoff returns for 1,372 yards (21.1 average).

McCluster made the Pro Bowl in 2013 as a punt returner with the Chiefs, also earning second-team All-Pro honors in the process.  As an added bonus, he boasts familiarity with Offensive Coordinator Ken Whisenhunt after spending the last two seasons with him in Tennessee.   He served as a team captain in 2015 before being surprisingly released shortly before this season began.

The Chargers also announced a switch to their practice squad, signing TE Austin Traylor and releasing OT Austin Shepherd. Traylor is a 6-3, 247-pound Wisconsin product who spent the offseason with the Dallas Cowboys. He caught three passes this preseason for 23 yards after catching 17 for 234 yards and four touchdowns in a predominantly blocking role over his college career with the Badgers.
