El martes marcó una marca para Rashawn Slater al salir del campo de entrenamiento durante la segunda semana de las OTA.
"Cuando revisé mi hoja en la sala de entrenamiento, vi que era el día 300 de mi rehabilitación," comentó Slater el martes. "300 días; simplemente he ido sumando jornada tras jornada y está dando sus frutos."
El tacle ofensivo de los Chargers ha trabajado arduamente desde que sufrió un desgarro en el tendón rotuliano durante una práctica el 3 de agosto, en el campamento de entrenamiento.
Hasta ahora, Slater ha estado presente en las actividades de la temporada baja, aunque su participación en los ejercicios de equipo ha sido limitada en ocasiones.
El martes explicó cómo han sido estos últimos 10 meses para él.
"Fue bastante duro, sobre todo al principio," dijo Slater. "Con el paso del tiempo, la mentalidad cambió a: 'Bueno, esto es lo que me ha tocado; ¿qué otra cosa puedes hacer en esta situación más que dar lo mejor de ti cada día?'"
"Sinceramente, simplemente me comprometí con el proceso, tal como lo habría hecho si estuviera jugando", añadió Slater. "¿Qué puedo hacer hoy para estar un paso más cerca de recuperar la salud?"
Más adelante agregó: "Sea lo que sea que tenga delante, lo afronto dándolo todo. En este caso no será diferente. No se trata de pensar: 'No voy a poder jugar'. Sé de lo que soy capaz. Me siento muy bien. Simplemente trabajo a diario, tratando de que cada día sea el mejor y de mejorar constantemente. Sé que todo se irá resolviendo por sí solo."

Desde que terminó la temporada de los Chargers, se han dado pasos importantes para llegar a su estado actual.
"Ha sido un proceso progresivo en cuanto a lo que he podido hacer, pero realmente empecé a correr hacia el final de la temporada," dijo Slater. "Hemos ido sumando trabajo poco a poco: ejercicios pliométricos, de potencia, sentadillas y todo eso. Al principio fue muy lento, pero con el tiempo todo empezó a fluir y ahora me siento genial."
Su compañero Joe Alt ha sido testigo directo del gran esfuerzo que Slater ha realizado desde agosto.
Alt pasó la temporada baja rehabilitándose de su lesión junto a Slater y elogió la actitud de su compañero para lograr su recuperación.
"Creo que lo más destacable de Rashawn es su mentalidad," comentó Alt sobre Slater. "Sale al campo cada día listo para darlo todo. Nosotros pasamos por algo similar el año pasado, y creo que eso es precisamente lo que hizo Rashawn: volver al campo y retomar el ritmo donde lo había dejado.
"Retomó exactamente el punto en el que estaba, tanto mental como físicamente, y estaba listo para la acción," añadió Alt. "Ha ido mejorando día a día desde que regresó, y ha sido genial compartir este proceso con él mientras ambos volvíamos a la actividad."
Slater espera recibir el alta médica para cuando comience el campamento de entrenamiento el próximo mes, aunque desconoce cuál será el plan de actuación exacto.
"No estoy seguro de qué tipo de limitaciones habrá, pero sé que recibiré el alta," dijo Slater. "Cualquier precaución que decidan tomar se basará exclusivamente en eso. En cuanto a cómo me siento, me siento fantástico."
Dicho esto, hasta ahora ha disfrutado muchísimo aprendiendo el nuevo esquema bajo la dirección del coordinador ofensivo de los Chargers, Mike McDaniel, señalando que le permitirá a él y al resto de la línea ofensiva jugar de una manera que le agrada.
"Ha sido genial, me encanta," dijo Slater. "Creo que el esquema es fantástico; nos permitirá jugar con velocidad y agresividad. Va a ser divertido."

Detalló qué es exactamente lo que más le ha gustado del ataque hasta ahora.
"Generas movimiento, imprimes velocidad al arrancar, estableces tus intenciones y simplemente ejecutas la acción, tratando de ser lo más contundente posible en la trayectoria que te corresponda en esa jugada", dijo Slater. "Nos permite jugar con rapidez y no pensar tanto. Cuando simplificas las cosas de esa manera, el estándar queda muy claro.
"O lo hacemos o no; o generamos movimiento y arrancamos con velocidad, o no lo hacemos," añadió Slater. "Nos facilita mucho las cosas: podemos ir acumulando y perfeccionando esos pequeños detalles y dejar que el juego fluya por sí solo."
Queda mucho camino por recorrer en la temporada baja antes de que los Chargers inicien su campaña en septiembre, pero Slater cree que esa mentalidad se ha estado gestando desde hace tiempo, incluso ya en junio.
Existe en el grupo el deseo de salir al campo y alcanzar el éxito que tanto el veterano como el resto del equipo han estado buscando, y creen contar con todo lo necesario para lograrlo.
"Llevo aquí desde 2021 y todavía no he conseguido una victoria en los playoffs", comentó Slater. "Sé de lo que somos capaces. Es hora de ir a por ello, es hora de hacerlo realidad. Nada nos detiene, no hay obstáculos en nuestro camino; simplemente hay que ir a por todas.
"Esa es la sensación que se respira en las instalaciones", agregó Slater. "Todos tenemos algo que demostrar por motivos personales, pero como equipo estamos listos para afrontar el desafío."
