Prácticamente se puede dar por sentado que Derwin James figura en cualquier lista de los mejores safeties de la NFL.
James — quien recientemente firmó una extensión — ha logrado dos temporadas consecutivas integrando en el segundo equipo All-Pro, haciendo caos ya sea en cobertura o en cualquier otra situación de juego.
Este jueves, ocupó el segundo lugar en la lista anual de ESPN de los mejores jugadores de su posición, escalando cuatro puestos con respecto al año anterior.
La clasificación se basa en las votaciones de ejecutivos, entrenadores y scouts de la liga. En esta lista anual — que cumple su séptima edición y fue elaborado por Jeremy Fowler, de ESPN — participaron más de 70 votantes.

El acuerdo fue la culminación de dos años sólidos de James bajo la dirección del entrenador en jefe Jim Harbaugh. Desde 2024, James acumula un total de 7.5 capturas, cuatro intercepciones, 16 tacledas con pérdida de yardas y 14 pases desviados.
"Creo que Derwin tuvo su mejor año, el más completo," comentó un entrenador de secundaria de la NFL. "Presionando al mariscal de campo, en cobertura, en los derribos... en general, estuvo realmente bien. ... Realmente puede hacerlo todo. Además, se ha mantenido sano durante un largo periodo, lo cual es positivo."
Tras perderse la mayor parte de las temporadas 2019 y 2020 debido a lesiones, James ha demostrado gran resistencia física en los últimos cinco años. Durante ese lapso, ha sido el único jugador de la NFL en registrar al menos 1.000 jugadas en cada una de estas posiciones: safety, esquinero de slot y linebacker exterior.

James terminó la temporada regular como el segundo mejor del equipo con un total de 94 tacles, además de siete pases defendidos, 2.0 capturas y 6.0 tacles para pérdida de yardas. También sumó tres intercepciones, igualando la mejor marca de su carrera y alcanzando su cifra más alta desde su temporada de novato en 2018.
Ha sido una pieza clave para el éxito que la defensa de los Chargers ha logrado en las últimas dos temporadas, ya que marca la pauta en todos los aspectos.
El entrenador en jefe de los Chargers, Jim Harbaugh, lo supo desde el momento en que llegó a Los Ángeles.
"Sabía que era un jugador increíble. Lo que descubrí tras un día y medio — cuando ya teníamos al equipo completo reunido," dijo Harbaugh, "Fue algo que recuerdo bien: a mitad del segundo entrenamiento, reuní a todos. Llevaba aquí un día y medio y esto es lo que había notado: Hagamos todo como lo hace el número 3. Ya sea en las reuniones, en el entrenamiento físico o en las prácticas en el campo."
"Cómo viste el uniforme, cómo desempeña su trabajo, cómo aborda todo lo que hace; todo, desde dar el ejemplo y marcar la pauta hasta contagiar su energía," añadió Harbaugh. "Simplemente, hagan todo como el número 3."
Ahora, se espera que el jugador de 29 años siga teniendo un impacto significativo bajo la dirección del nuevo coordinador defensivo de los Chargers, Chris O'Leary.
Sea cual sea la exigencia, James está listo para hacerse notar bajo las órdenes del nuevo responsable de la estrategia defensiva en 2026.
"Él me comunicará lo que necesite de mí, y ese rol puede variar cada semana," comentó James durante la temporada baja. "Me considero un jugador muy versátil capaz de hacer lo que haga falta: marcar al ala cerrada, marcar al corredor, ejecutar un blitz esa semana, jugar en la zona central o cubrir en profundidad."
Más adelante añadió: "Siento que puedo ayudar al equipo en lo que requiera el plan de juego."
