5 Takeaways: Jim Harbaugh Gives Injury Updates as Chargers Prep for Week 1 in Brazil

Jim Harbaugh and the Bolts are ready to roll with the season opener on the horizon.

The Chargers Head Coach took to the podium Monday morning with the first game week of the year in full swing.

Here are five takeaways from Harbaugh's press conference.

1. Updates on Najee Harris, Quentin Johnston

With the regular-season opener just four days away, there is "a possibility" that Najee Harris could suit up against the Chiefs, according to the Chargers Head Coach.

The Chargers running back was back on the practice field with the team last week for the first time since June and has increased his involvement of late.

"He's looked good in practice," Harbaugh said about Harris. "[He] has a really good awareness of what we're doing, the situations. Physically, he's done very well as well."

He later added: "There's a possibility."

Harris sustained a superficial eye injury during a fireworks mishap on July 4 and was put on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) List ahead of training camp. But Harris was on the Chargers initial 53-man roster when it was revealed last week, meaning he could be ready for action sooner rather than later.

The veteran running back, who signed with the Chargers this offseason as a free agent, has rushed for 1,000-plus yards in each of his first four NFL seasons.

Harbaugh echoed that the team will continue to take it day-by-day with the opener on the horizon.

"He's looked really good in practice and cleared for contact," Harbaugh said. "Just take it one day at a time."

Continuing on the injury front, Harbaugh also provided an update on Quentin Johnston.

The Chargers Head Coach said on Monday the wide receiver has cleared concussion protocol and is good to go after entering the protocol in the preseason game against the Rams.

"Quentin is out of the protocol," Harbaugh said. "He's been cleared."

2. Feels like game week

The Bolts are taking to the practice field with a different feeling in the air this week.

"Feels great to be in game week," Harbaugh said.

After an entire offseason and training camp, the team now continues the week with a regular-season game on the docket.

"Just that feeling of putting yourself in game mode during practice is so critical," Harbaugh said. "I know guys have been doing that, but it really narrows the focus when you're in game week."

As far as what he hopes to see from his team in Week 1 after the offseason, Harbaugh's message was straightforward.

"Just keep doing what they're doing. I know our guys are really fired up for this game," Harbaugh said. "Just want to go out there and play good, that's really what it comes down to.

"We're going to have to play really good," Harbaugh added.

The opponent in Week 1, of course, is an AFC West rival in the Chiefs, whom they know very well.

Friday's contest marks the first time the teams have opened a season against each other since 2018.

The respect level is high for the opponent, as they know they will have to bring it against the challenge that awaits — and they're fired up to do just that.

"We can expect the Chiefs will play good and be two opposing wills meeting each other," Harbaugh said. "You love it, competition at the highest level right in the opener.

"If you don't like a challenge, you don't like to compete ... I know our guys love to compete," Harbaugh added. "They're ready, willing and able for that challenge."

3. Plan for São Paulo

The Bolts will be wheels up on their way to São Paulo in just over 24 hours.

Harbaugh talked about what's on deck in the coming days for the team as they prepare for their 6,000-plus mile trip to Brazil for the opener.

"Get on the plane 5 o'clock on Tuesday night, three hours of either watching a move, watching tape and then sleep the rest of the time," Harbaugh said. "We'll get to Brazil and pretty much stay on California time, West Coast time.

The idea, as Harbaugh explained, is to stay on Pacific Standard Time as much as possible for when the team arrives in São Paulo on Wednesday morning.

There has been extensive preparation that has gone into it, including reaching out to those who participated in this game a year ago.

"Reached out to staffs, reached out to as many people as they could in a lot of different areas, professions, those who have done it before," Harbaugh said. "Like I said, they've thoroughly plowed into all the details."

As for practice, the Bolts are scheduled to hold sessions at The Bolt on Monday and Tuesday before another session in Brazil on Wednesday.

Harbaugh credited the travel, equipment and every member of staff that has been able to make this trip as smooth as possible as they get ready to play on an international stage.

"Staff has made is so good, really broken it down Barney style for us that gives us the feeling of excitement in travel and go play the opener on a huge stage," Harbaugh said.

4. Year 13 for No. 13

Friday's season opener also marks Keenan Allen’s return in the powder blue.

Allen is slated to play in his 140th regular season game for the Bolts, the second-most among a wide receiver in Chargers franchise history and seventh-most overall.

Harbaugh said Allen has been right in the thick of it since arriving during training camp.

The all-time leader for most receptions (904) and yards (10,530) among Chargers wide receivers has displayed the connection with quarterback Justin Herbert and will get another year to build on it starting Friday.

"On the field it's been great right from Day 1," Harbaugh said. "It looks professional, Justin throwing to him, him running the route, the timing.

"There's a lot of chemistry already there and that was evident since day one," Harbaugh added.

Not only has Allen come in like he never left on the field, he's made a great connection off the field in his short time with the team.

Allen was voted as an alternate captain by his teammates last week despite being on the team for less than a month.

His veteran presence has been more than apparent and will continue to be valuable as he prepares for his 12th season in the powder blue.

"And the respect that he has from his teammates spoke volumes," Harbaugh said. "Our team, our players voted Keenan as an alternate captain for this season, and he just got here less than a month ago. Speaks volumes."

5. Prepared for anything

The Bolts are prepared for everything in São Paulo — including what type of grass and conditions await them at Arena Corinthians.

When asked about the field conditions, Harbaugh said on Monday there was certainly preparation on that front, but they'll have a better idea once they arrive at the stadium.

And it helps to have a pair of players who played in that stadium a season ago in Mekhi Becton and Rick Lovato, who were on the Eagles during last year's Week 1 game in Brazil.

"We definitely have a focus on that. When we're able to touch the grass and see," Harbaugh said. "Rick Lovato played in that game last year, so he's spoken on that, as well as Mekhi Becton.

"We'll see for ourselves when we get out there," Harbaugh added.

Speaking of Becton, the Chargers Head Coach was thrilled with what he's seen from the lineman as they get closer to the opener.

The right guard, who has practiced over the last couple of weeks, looks good according to Harbaugh and has been full steam ahead of Week 1.

"It was great to see the bounce in his step," Harbaugh said. "He did everything and anything he could to get back as fast he could.

"Was really locked in and focused," he added. "It was great to have him out there with us on our side."
