Chargers Camp Report: Derwin James & Khalil Mack Highlight Strong Defensive Day

KhalilMackCamp

Chargers Training Camp was back in action Tuesday.

The Bolts held their 18th practice of camp, although this one was closed to fans, going for more than 90 minutes in full pads.

The team will practice Wednesday and Thursday at The Bolt before the Chargers play the Rams in preseason action on Saturday at 4 p.m. (PT) at SoFi Stadium.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Tuesday's practice:

1. James, Mack dominate on Tuesday

Derwin James, Jr. and Khalil Mack must be itching for game action.

Because the pair of veteran defensive playmakers stole the show at Tuesday's practice by dominating the day.

Yes, most of their work came against offensive reserves, but there was also little doubt who the best players on the field were.

James tallied a pair of sacks, both on blitzes, which showcased a skill he used in 2024 when he set a career high with 5.5 sacks.

The do-it-all safety also had a pair of additional tackles for loss, which brought his overall total to four on Tuesday.

Mack, meanwhile, was also raring to go as he notched a pair of sacks plus another tackle for loss.

The 34-year-old contemplated retirement this offseason but looked in prime form on this day.

Other defensive highlights included a sack from Teair Tart, plus a tackle for loss and a pass breakup from Donte Jackson.

2. McConkey flashes in team drills

Ladd McConkey worked back into team drills Tuesday for the first time in roughly two weeks.

The Chargers wide receiver showed a quick rapport with quarterback Justin Herbert as McConkey caught five passes in team drills, most of which came over the middle of the field.

McConkey noted Tuesday that it's been refreshing to be a full participant in practice of late.

"I feel really good. Felt great to get back out there, run out a little bit, catching passes. It was good," McConkey said.

He later added: "I feel like I'm there now, just building everything back up, getting in the swing of things, getting my conditioning back to where it needs to be. I feel solid, feel good."

A final offensive note: Luke Grimm caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Justin Herbert in Tuesday's session.

3. Extra notes

A few quick final notes here...

Omarion Hampton flashed Tuesday in full pads by showing good burst and elusiveness on run plays. The first-round rookie running back obviously wasn't getting tackled, but he was getting to the second level with the ball in his hands.

Elijah Molden wore a normal white practice jersey Tuesday, the first time he's ditched the yellow precautionary jersey in practice. Molden, who re-signed with the Chargers in free agency this past offseason, rehabbed from a leg injury this offseason.

The top offensive line Tuesday was, from left to right, Joe Alt, Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman, Jamaree Salyer and Trey Pipkins III. Andre James took some center reps with that group in the latter half of practice.

Trey Lance didn't take any reps at quarterback in team drills Tuesday as Taylor Heinicke got all of them with the second-team offense. But Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman said after practice that Lance's workload was by design as the team wanted to get Herbert increased reps in practice.
