5 Chargers Players Who Stood Out in Preseason Win vs. Saints

5PlayersSaints

The Chargers returned to preseason action with a big 27-13 win over New Orleans at SoFi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Here are five players who stood out against the Saints:

OLB Caleb Murphy

It's been hard to miss Murphy through the Bolts first two preseason games.

The 25-year-old outside linebacker has been making splash play after splash play in training camp so far and that held true in Sunday's preseason game against the Saints.

Murphy filled up the stat sheet with three total tackles, 2.0 sacks, two quarterback hits, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

"I felt really proud of myself," Murphy said. "You go out there, you work hard and whatever you put at practice tends to show up in the games. That's all I want to do."

But if you ask Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, he saw this coming for Murphy because of how he's been performing and told the team such pregame.

Oh, and he counted three sacks, not two.

"I don't know what the stat sheet said but I gave him three sacks," Harbaugh said postgame. "He had a heck of a game."

Harbaugh later added: "He's making a good case [for the 53-man roster]. He's been making it in practice as well. Really happy for his success. I could see it coming. Humility prevents me from saying I predicted that but the facts are that I did."

Murphy's first big play of the game was a strip sack early in the second quarter on quarterback Spencer Rattler that was recovered by Justin Eboigbe and set up the first Chargers points of the day. He later added another sack on the Saints next drive.

Even for as strong of a case he's making for the 53-man roster so far, Murphy said that isn't at the top of his mind.

He just wants to continue performing the way he has as he feels like things are heading in the right direction for him.

"Nah, that's not my job. My job is to come out here and perform," Murphy said. "Just do my job to the best of my ability and that's that."

He later added: "Definitely feels like things are clicking [for me]."

CB Eric Rogers

Any time you can create a handful big splash plays, you'll surely be making some noise.

Undrafted free agent cornerback Eric Rogers showed up big on Sunday afternoon with two massive plays as he notched a pick 6 in the third quarter then another interception later in the game.

His first came in the third quarter in what was still a tight game.

On a third-and 6, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough dropped back to pass and intended an out route to Saints receiver Dante Pettis.

Rogers, however, was more than ready for the play as he jumped the route and made the diving interception. He quickly returned to his feet and took it 43 yards the other way for the score.

"The pick 6, that was as good a play as I've ever seen," Harbaugh said. "As good a play as you can make.

"The break on the ball, the avoid of the receiver, completing the catch to the ground," Harbaugh added. "Then getting back up and he was rolling."

The cornerback once again showed off his anticipation skills later in the game with the Saints driving just past midfield.

After Shough scrambled out of the pocket, Rogers kept his eyes on the quarterback the whole way and made a leaping interception to halt another offensive drive.

"Quite a big day by him," Harbaugh said. "Really incredible."

The rookie out of Rutgers has made impact plays in both Chargers preseason games so far as he recorded a forced fumble and a pass defensed in last week's Hall of Fame Game.

QB Trey Lance

Although Lance and the passing game overall wasn't as effective as the first game, the quarterback stood out in a big way with the use of his legs.

Lance led the team with 48 rushing yards on seven attempts to go along with his 55 yards passing. Four of those rushes came on third down and helped move the chains.

And it helped propel what was another solid performance for the 25-year-old.

"It helps me out a lot with getting out of sticky situations," Lance said of his mobility.

That ability was huge all game, especially on the Chargers first touchdown drive of the day.

Lance scrambled four times for a total of 36 yards on the scoring drive, capping it off with a 5-yard rushing touchdown to push it to a 9-0 game.

"I thought Trey Lance did an outstanding job," Harbaugh said. "He wanted to pick the first down up, go use his legs and secure the ball and move the team. I thought he had a heck of a game."

He later added: "Some key third downs, just allows you to move the chains and get a new set of downs. Again, I thought he played really good. Good presence and poised and in control. Just make the right decisions … that's really what it comes down to. Not everyone can do it."

Lance had yet another game without a turnover, and he hopes to continue his performances for the final two preseason games.

"That's the plan ... keep stacking one day at a time," Lance said. "Try to have great practices and keep stacking those on top of each other. And then great games, continue to stack those.

"I thought last week was a good starting point and this week was another one, another big win," Lance added. "Excited for next week."

DL Jamaree Caldwell

Caldwell had been a name echoed by the coaching staff and players, including Khalil Mack, following the Bolts preseason opener.

He followed it up with a louder performance on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

Caldwell was everywhere against the Saints, finishing the day with four tackles, a sack, a quarterback hit and tackle for loss.

The Chargers third-round pick was disruptive in the run game once again as two of his tackles came on run plays that gained just a yard or less.

"I feel like the organization and [defensive line coach Mike] Elston have done a good job of putting me in positions where I can show more of my explosiveness," Caldwell said after the game.

He later added: "I feel like I'm getting more of my juice back. They just put me in the right spots."

And even showed off his pass rush ability at multiple points of the game.

His first came on New Orleans' first offensive drive of the game where he drew a holding penalty that stalled their offensive drive.

Then in the third quarter came his highlight play as on a second-and 10.

Facing a double team off the snap, Caldwell remained patient in his lane before pouncing on the opportunity to sack Shough and later force the Saints to punt.

He has flashed so far through two games and is continuing to gain valuable game reps as he progresses through his rookie season — and he's looking to show even more in the final pair of preseason games.

"Some more pass rush juice. I feel like I let up on a couple of more sacks," Caldwell said. "I wish I could've got some more.

"Just some more pass rush juice, discipline in the run game with my eyes and just striking and come out the ball," he added.

WR Dalevon Campbell

The undrafted rookie for South Carolina has made his number of plays throughout training camp so far, especially when it came to hauling in the deep ball.

That translated well from the practice field to the live game for Campbell on Sunday.

With the Chargers offense facing a third-and 5 from their own 40-yard line, Campbell went long on a deep route down the left side of the field.

The receiver beat his man deep and DJ Uiagalelei was able to layer it over double coverage for the 49-yard reception that would set up the final Chargers touchdown of the day.

"D-Camp, he's been doing that in practice," Harbaugh said. "I don't think any receiver has caught as many go balls as D Camp.

"He's done a nice job and that was a heck of a play he made on that ball," Harbaugh added.

Campbell finished the day with three receptions for a team-leading 62 yards and a 2-point conversion reception.
