5 Takeaways: Trey Lance Impresses Again in Chargers Preseason Win

TreyLance5Takes

Make it two straight preseason wins for the Chargers after they picked up a 27-13 victory over the Saints on Sunday.

Here are five takeaways from the Bolts preseason win.

1. Lance impresses again at QB

Another week, another solid performance from Trey Lance.

The Chargers quarterback didn't have the gaudy passing stats as he did in last week's win over the Lions, but still showed the same cool and calm demeanor that Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh likes to see.

"I thought he played really good," Harbaugh said. "Good presence and poised and in control. Just make the right decisions … that's really what it comes down to. Not everyone can do it."

Lance threw for just 55 yards against New Orleans but was effective with his legs as he ran seven times for a team-high 48 yards.

That output included multiple third-down conversions and a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

"It helps me out a lot with getting out of sticky situations," Lance said of his scrambling ability.

Taylor Heinicke started at quarterback for the Chargers and completed one of his five passes for 8 yards.

Harbaugh postgame said he wasn't going to speculate on the backup quarterback battle, and Lance himself said he's too in the moment to worry about it.

"That's the plan ... keep stacking one day at a time," Lance said. "Try to have great practices and keep stacking those on top of each other. And then great games, continue to stack those.

"I thought last week was a good starting point and this week was another one, another big win. Excited for next week," added Lance, who was without a turnover for the second straight game.

2. Rogers, Murphy make splash plays

Harbaugh, as he usually does, answered the first question of his postgame press conference by rattling off some players who stood out to him.

The first two he mentioned?

Eric Rogers and Caleb Murphy.

Rogers had two interceptions Sunday, including a pick 6 in the third quarter that he returned 43 yards for a score.

Rogers was injured late in the game on kickoff coverage and did not speak to reporters. Harbaugh said he was getting checked out but had plenty of praise for his play.

"The pick 6, that was as good a play as I've ever seen," Harbaugh said. "As good a play as you can make.

"The break on the ball, the avoid of the receiver, completing the catch to the ground. Then getting back up and he was rolling," Harbaugh said. "Quite a big day by him. Really incredible."

Murphy, meanwhile, has 2.0 sacks, including a strip sack, but Harbaugh said he felt Murphy had another sack that should have been credited to him.

"I don't know what the stat sheet said but I gave him three sacks. He had a heck of a game," Harbaugh said.

Murphy spent the 2024 season on the Bolts practice squad but has impressed throughout camp and during the preseason.

With two preseason games left, it's safe to say he's firmly in the mix to make the 53-man roster.

In fact , Harbaugh said that he told the Chargers pregame that Murphy was going to have a big game.

"He's making a good case," Harbaugh said. "He's been making it in practice as well. Really happy for his success. I could see it coming. Humility prevents me from saying I predicted that but the facts are that I did."

Through two games, the Chargers have an 8-1 advantage in the turnover margin, with their lone giveaway coming Sunday on special teams.

3. 'Rocket' launches a TD

Raheim 'Rocket' Sanders had one of the offense's top highlights Sunday when he scored on an 11-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

The touchdown put the stamp on the Bolts win ... and also caused the undrafted rookie free agent to black out for a moment.

"I feel like the film study as a running back, learning film and learning the plays," Sanders said. "That was a play I felt like was going to hit just by the penetration. I just trusted my reads, patient and got in the end zone."

Sanders missed the Chargers first preseason game with an injury but said he worked hard to be on the field for this one.

"It felt [like] a blessing, to be honest," Sanders said. "Last week I wasn't able to make it, but being there for the running back room and seeing how everything looked. It's just a blessing to be back."

Harbaugh added: "I thought he did a really nice job, too. Ran hard, secured the ball, had some good tough runs. He's been working through stuff and got out there today and showed what he could do."

With two preseason games left, Sanders is certainly in the mix to make a push for the 53-man roster out of camp.

"Really just taking it one day at a time. Take advantage of any opportunity that comes my way," Sanders said.

"There's a lot of good players there and they're showing that," Harbaugh added about the running back room.

4. All about effort

Harbaugh said earlier this week that the competitiveness to make this year's 53-man roster is much higher than it was a season ago.

He credited Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz and his staff for building depth and talent on the bottom half of the roster.

That mantra was evident on Sunday as the Chargers played with obvious effort and enthusiasm in all three phases.

"The first thing that pops into my mind, just the whole team played with a lot of 'Want to.' I'm thrilled with that," Harbaugh said.

He later added: "It brings a smile to my face. I love guys that play like they want to be on the team and show that they belong. That's the way they practice and that's the way they play in the game."

And no, Sunday's game wasn't perfect by any means.

But Harbaugh said he'll always prefer coaching guys up after a miscue when they've made an extra effort than when they haven't.

"You make mistakes, that's something that should be embraced. That is a tool to get better," Harbaugh added. "They showed they got the fight in them and that makes me happy."

5. No joint practice with Rams

The Chargers were scheduled to host the Rams on Wednesday for an 11:30 a.m. joint practice at The Bolt.

Rams Head Coach Sean McVay said Saturday night that they Chargers had cancelled those plans, something Harbaugh confirmed postgame Sunday.

"Truth," Harbaugh said.

The thought process?

The Chargers roster is banged up, whether it's a season-ending knee injury to Rashawn Slater or other players who are dealing with something phsycially.

"That's the biggest reason," Harbaugh said. "And we're playing four preseason games. We've still got two more preseason games to go, but that's the truth."
