Chargers Camp Report: Justin Herbert Throws 3 TDs at Friday's Practice

Another week of Chargers Training Camp is in the books.

The Bolts held their 17th practice of camp Friday, going for roughly 75 minutes in shoulder pads and shorts.

The Chargers host the Saints in preseason action on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. (PT) at SoFi Stadium.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Friday's practice:

1. Herbert lights it up

Quick reminder: the Chargers are still Justin Herbert's team.

A day after the Bolts lost left tackle Rashawn Slater to a season-ending knee injury, the Chargers quarterback lit up Friday's practice and sent a message that the team is going to be just fine in 2025.

Herbert's big day mostly came in the red zone as he found tight end Tyler Conklin for a 20-yard score up the seam on the first play of a drill.

Two plays later, Herbert connected with Quentin Johnston in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

Herbert, for old times sake, later hit Keenan Allen for a 15-yard touchdown pass to cap off the red-zone drill.

Herbert pointed to Allen, who made a leaping catch, after the play ... something the two did often in their previous seasons together.

Herbert was also on the money Friday even when he wasn't throwing touchdowns.

He and Conklin teamed up on a catch over the middle as the quarterback zipped the ball into the tight end and past the hands of a nearby Daiyan Henley. It was a throw only a few NFL quarterbacks can make.

Tight end Oronde Gadsden also had a 20-yard touchdown catch in the red zone on a beautiful pass from Taylor Heinicke, who will start at quarterback Sunday against the Saints.

Heinicke later fared well in a third-down drill, moving the chains on four different plays with completions to Jaylen Johnson, Will Dissly, Conklin and Tucker Fisk.

Defensively, rookie RJ Mickens and Trkweze Bridges had interceptions off tipped passes. Mickens' takeaway came off a pass that hit off Tre' Harris' hands before Junior Colson deflected a throw that Bridges came down with.

2. A look at the O-line

Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday before practice that the team will move Joe Alt to left tackle and slot Trey Pipkins III in at right tackle after Slater's injury.

The interior, from left to right, is expected to be Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman and Mekhi Becton.

But with Bozeman and Becton not practicing Friday, the Chargers had a bit of a mixed unit up front.

Alt and Pipkins were at the tackle spots and Johnson was at left guard, but Andre James filled in at center while Jamaree Salyer lined up at right guard.

Johnson and James later switched positions for the end of practice, with Johnson moving to center for a few reps.

Harbaugh said earlier in the week that Johnson will play center in the second preseason game against the Saints.

3. McConkey returns to practice

The Chargers got a boost Friday when Ladd McConkey returned to practice.

The wide receiver had missed some recent practices but was back in on a limited basis Friday.

McConkey did not participate in full-team drills but did get some reps in 7-on-7 and caught a pass from Herbert.
