Chargers Camp Report: Mekhi Becton Returns to Practice

Day 22 of Chargers Training Camp is complete as just two more practices remain.

The Chargers will practice Wednesday and Thursday at The Bolt before Saturday's preseason finale on the road at the 49ers.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Tuesday's practice:

1. Becton back in the mix

The Chargers received a big boost along their offensive line Tuesday as Mekhi Becton returned to practice.

The Bolts starting right guard, who signed with the team in free agency, hadn't practiced of late but took part in stretches and individual drills.

"It was great to see him out there engaging with everybody," said Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman. "He's been taking part in walkthroughs, which has been critical.

"But he's coming along and it was great to have him out there," Roman added. "He brings a great presence to the group. And a big, physical presence, too. He's working his way through it. Onwards and upwards."

Roman said Becton had been recently working Ben Herbert, the Chargers Executive Director of Player Performance, at The Bolt.

The Chargers open the 2025 season against the Chiefs in São Paulo, Brazil on September 5.

"He's been working with 'Herb,' doing a great job there, fully committed," Roman said. "You can really see those guys building a great relationship, which I think will be really beneficial for Mekhi, his future.

"Whatever time we have, we will use it. I think he will be good to go," Roman added.

Becton did not participate in team drills as Jamaree Salyer took those reps at right guard. Salyer lined up with Joe Alt, Zion Johnson, Bradley Bozeman and Trey Pipkins III in the top group.

Elsewhere on the offensive line, the Chargers continued to heavily rotated their second-team line. The Bolts unveiled a rotation Monday and stuck with it Tuesday, using as many as five different combinations with that group.

Of note: recent sixth-round pick Branson Taylor worked at both left and right tackle after he primarily worked at guard earlier in camp.

"We're just moving things around and building as much functional depth as we can," Roman said. "Branson out at tackle, that's probably his natural position. But we want to build that guard/tackle flex with him.

"He was working through something so he missed a little bit of time," Roman said. "We were going to do it earlier but we weren't able to. We're going to keep moving those guys around, keep getting them as much work as we can."

2. McConkey wows with route

Ladd McConkey was on fire Monday as he caught six passes in team drills and made it clear that he's ready to take him game to another level.

But the Chargers wide receiver pulled something special out of his bag of tricks on Tuesday.

On the fourth play of full-team drills Tuesday, McConkey unleashed a route that left a Chargers defender in the dust as the wide receiver created nearly 10 yards of separation by the time he made a catch down the right sideline.

Note: we won't mention the cornerback who got beat on the play. But he play drew an audible reaction from Chargers offensive players, especially the wide receivers, as it was easily the best route we've seen during training camp.

Tre' Harris concurred with that statement.

"Right now, I'll give him [No.] 1," Harris said when asked to rank the best routes of camp.

Roman said Tuesday that McConkey simply just keeps getting better.

"Ladd is a special guy," Roman said. "We've tried to catch him up on some things, get him a little extra work the past couple of days.

"Ladd, not only his physical traits, but his mental acuity, his ability as a football player, his toughness and his will," Roman continued. "I keep talking about his will because just puts his mind to something and [is a] get it done type of guy. Which is very powerful, a very powerful thing.

"Love how that whole group's going. Love hearing him and Keenan [Allen] communicating about different types of routes and whatnot. Then those guys talking to the younger guys," Roman added.

Fellow wide receiver Derius Davis also had a strong day, which included a diving catch on a deep ball from Justin Herbert in a 7-on-7 drill.

Herbert, by the way, was lights out in the red zone to end practice by throwing touchdowns to Harris, Allen (twice) and Tyler Conklin.

3. Highlights from the defense

Tarheeb Still notched an interception for the second straight day to lead the defensive highlights.

Khalil Mack and Derwin James, Jr. tallied sacks while Junior Colson had a solid third-down pass breakup over the middle in a team drill.

Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste later had a one-armed interception in the end zone during the final portion of practice in the red zone.
