What a homecoming for Quentin Johnston.
The Chargers wide receiver grew up in Temple, Texas — roughly 140 miles from AT&T Stadium — and had himself a day in his return to an area he knows very well in the Chargers' big road win against the Cowboys.
The 2023 first-round pick played his high school football in Temple and spent his college days at TCU, a short drive from where he suited up on Sunday afternoon.
And from the moment he arrived back in his home state, he had a good inkling of how it was going to go.
"I feel good to be back in Texas, around where I went to college and essentially where I grew up," Johnston said postgame. "As soon as I got off the plane, I was feeling good about this game. I had a whole bunch of people here."
Johnston estimated he had close to 50 friends and family in attendance for Sunday's game, including his father, who was celebrating his birthday.
It was quite the showing he put on, too.
Johnston hauled in a team-leading 104 receiving yards on four receptions and a dazzling touchdown catch. It was the third game of his young career eclipsing the 100-yard mark and the first time he did it this season.
"Great speed in routes the entire day, blocked well," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said about Johnston.
It was his first game back after missing last week's game — and it was perhaps the most highlight-filled game of his career to date.
Johnston got the game started on the opening offensive drive for the Chargers with perhaps the best catch of his career.
Finding himself 1-on-1, Johnston got a step on the cornerback and made his way to the back of the end zone, where Justin Herbert dropped in a ball he snagged with one hand.
"Tremendous," Harbaugh said. "One of the best catches of his career."
Herbert added: "Those passes where you believe in him. It's, 'You know what, I'm betting on Q.' Then he goes and makes some big plays."
The stellar one-handed touchdown grab was the eighth of the season for Johnston as he became the first Charger since Antonio Gates to catch at least eight touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.
Johnston wasn't done, however, as he came back early in the second half with another highlight.
On the second play of the third quarter, Herbert stepped up in the pocket and uncorked a back shoulder ball deep down the sideline to give Johnston a chance in another 1-on-1 situation.
Not only did the third-year receiver leap and make the grab over a defender, he got his feet inbounds for a massive chunk gain of 50 yards.
He's shown his big play ability before and did just that on Sunday in a big way.
"Definitely shows my growth and my hard work and stuff like that," Johnston said.
He later added: "To get to this moment, proud of myself."
The Chargers quarterback had high praise for Johnston and his improvement as well.
"Q has just gotten so much better. It's so tough to track the ball like that, especially running downfield," Herbert said. "So I've got so much respect for receivers and what they're able to do.
"Q has stepped up so big time … it's definitely a part of his game where we definitely need to throw him more," Herbert added. "If he's able to make plays like that, that's on me to get him the ball in space and let him do his thing."
Johnston put on quite the show for his friends and family back in his home state while helping the Bolts get to 11-4 on the season.
"I just had a good feeling when I woke up this morning," Johnston said. "I was excited to come back home and do a super good job for my team."
