Justin Herbert, Chargers Offense Power Past Cowboys in Week 16 Road Win

ChargersCowboysGameRecap

The Chargers are 11-4 as they used a dominant effort to roll past the Cowboys for a 34-17 road win on Sunday.

Here's a game recap from Week 16:

Turning Point

There were plenty of fireworks early on Sunday as the first half of the Chargers-Cowboys matchup was a shootout.

Neither team punted in the opening half that saw them combined for 444 yards of offense.

Justin Herbert and Co. were on fire early as the Chargers quarterback threw nearly 200 yards and a pair of scores — to Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey — as the Bolts scored touchdowns on their first three offensive drives to open the game.

The Cowboys offense was plenty explosive, too, as Dak Prescott and his playmakers put up 17 points of their own before halftime.

But the second half was a different story as the Chargers took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Bolts defense rose up after halftime, forcing a Dallas punt on the Cowboys first possession of the second half that was also the first punt in the entire game. It came with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter.

The Chargers defense then stepped up again late in the third frame.

With the Bolts leading 24-17, the Cowboys drove into the red zone and faced fourth-and-1 from the 16-yard line.

But the Chargers run defense came up with a timely stuff as Jamaree Caldwell and Da'Shawn Hand teamed up for a turnover on downs to give the offense the ball back.

Herbert took advantage and provided a spark with a 34-yard run to get the Chargers into Cowboys territory.

Herbert later hit Keenan Allen to move the chains and get into the red zone before the Chargers added to their lead with Cameron Dicker's second field goal of the game to go up 27-17.

The Bolts defense continued their second-half dominance with another turnover on downs just past the midway point of the fourth quarter.

The Chargers then put the cherry on top as Omarion Hampton ran for a 5-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Top Play

Welcome back, Quentin Johnston.

The wide receiver made his return to the lineup Sunday after missing last week's game with a groin injury ... and promptly made perhaps the best catch of his career against the Cowboys.

The Texas native, who starred at TCU in college, helped the Bolts tie the game on their first possession.

Down 7-0, the Chargers moved to the edge of the red zone before Herbert lofted a pass down the left sideline in Johnston's direction.

The third-year player needed just one hand to haul in the ball as he snagged Herbert's pass with his left hand before pressing it against his chest to secure the score.

The touchdown reception was Johnston's eighth of the year, which equals his total from last season.

Johnston became the first Chargers pass catcher to hit at least eight scores in back-to-back seasons since Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates, who did it in seven straight seasons from 2004 to 2010.

Key Stat

Herbert was rolling in the first half Sunday, completing 14 of 16 passes for 173 yards and pair of touchdown passes.

Herbert, who posted a passer rating of 151.3 in the opening half, also ran for a 1-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.

Sunday marked Herbert's 13th career game with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown, breaking a tie with John Hadl for the most in Chargers franchise history.
