Which Chargers QBs Made Bleacher Report's Top 99 All-Time Rankings?

TopQBBuzz

The Chargers have had a number of all-time quarterbacks throughout the franchise's history — including the one currently under center.

Bleacher Report's NFL panel of writers and editors took on the daunting task of voting and ranking the 99 greatest quarterbacks in the history of the league, taking into account stats, accolades and just about everything that comes with playing the position.

Justin Herbert came in at No. 93, one of 14 active quarterbacks on the all-time ranking.

A two-time Pro Bowler and former Offensive Rookie of the Year, Herbert has amassed over 24,000 passing yards and 160 touchdowns so far in his career.

Not to mention his elite playmaking ability and comeback moments that he's displayed in the powder blue.

There's a lot of time for Herbert to continue to make his way up the list, but there's no doubt he's shown why he's deserving of being on this list.

They wrote:

Herbert holds the record for most passing touchdowns (31) and 300-plus-yard games (eight) in a rookie season. He's also the only player to throw for 30 or more touchdowns in each of his first two seasons. The 27-year-old is the Los Angeles Chargers' single-season record-holder in passing yards (5,014), touchdowns (38), fourth-quarter comebacks (five) and game-winning drives (five).

At 6'6" and 236 pounds with an increasing willingness to use his legs, Herbert is still on the rise as one of the NFL's best improvisational quarterbacks.

Take a look back at the best photos of Justin Herbert's 2025 campaign. Herbert recorded 3727 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 498 yards rushing in the 2025-2026 NFL season.

A pair of other long-time Chargers icons also made Bleacher Report's list.

The highest-ranking member was none other than Dan Fouts, who spent his entire 15-year playing career as a member of the Bolts.

Fouts, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, was listed at No. 23 on the rankings after an explosive NFL career that saw him at the forefront of an aerial passing attack under Hall of Fame coach Don Coryell.

His big numbers speak for themselves as one of the best passers in the history of the NFL.

They wrote:

Dan Fouts put up some truly gaudy numbers in his heyday.

Playing in Don Coryell's pass-heavy offense, Fouts led the NFL in passing yards four straight seasons from 1979-1982. In three of those seasons, Fouts threw for over 4,000 yards —including two seasons with over 4,500.

In 1981, he led the NFL in passing attempts (609), completions (360), passing yards (4,802) and passing touchdowns (33) while averaging over 300 yards per game through the air. That year, Fouts made the Pro Bowl for the fourth of what would be five straight times. At the time, those 4,802 yards were the most in a single season in NFL history.

The following season, Fouts was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. At the end of his 15-year NFL career, Fouts had thrown for over 43,000 yards — a franchise record at the time. In 1993, Fouts was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Fouts was closely followed by another long-time quarterback of the Bolts, Philip Rivers, at No. 32.

Relive the unforgettable moments of QB Philip Rivers career. Rivers played 16 seasons for the Chargers, was an eight-time Pro Bowler and holds more than 30 franchise records.

With over 63,000 passing yards and a number of Chargers records under his name, the eight-time Pro Bowler's long career had him among the best in the league.

Rivers never missed a game due to injury in his long career, and his eye-popping numbers on the all-time rankings make him an easy selection for this list.

They wrote:

Rivers spent 16 years with the Chargers, 14 as their starter. He made eight Pro Bowls, delivered six playoff berths and won four division titles. The 2013 Comeback Player of the Year also led the league in a variety of categories, including passing touchdowns in 2008, passing yards in 2010 and completions in 2015.

The NC State product never missed a game due to injury and amassed some gaudy numbers along the way. His 63,984 passing yards and 425 passing touchdowns rank eighth and sixth on the all-time list, respectively.

A number of other former Chargers quarterbacks also made Bleacher Report's rankings.

The most notable was Drew Brees at No. 8 overall. Brees was recently announced as a member of the Class of 2026 for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A second-round pick of the Chargers in 2001, Brees played five seasons with the team and is now on his way to Canton, Ohio.

On the rankings was also John Hadl at No. 62, a Chargers Hall of Famer who played 11 of his 16 years with the Bolts.
