Chargers Camp Report: Harbaugh Gives Update on Starting Offensive Line

OffensiveLineCamp

The Bolts are through 14 practices of Chargers Training Camp.

The Chargers held a short, non-padded session Monday by going for roughly 75 minutes at The Bolt.

The team will practice again Tuesday at 5 p.m. before an off day on Wednesday.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Monday's practice:

1. An O-Line update

Jim Harbaugh appears close to naming a starting offensive line.

The Chargers Head Coach was asked Monday if he had a timeline on naming a starting five, with the only real questions being whether or not Zion Johnson or Bradley Bozeman would be at center. The other player would slot into left guard.

"I'm pretty much getting there," Harbaugh said. "It's Boze right now at center and Zion at guard."

He later added: "The best five right now as we see it is Rashawn [Slater] at left tackle, Zion [Johnson] at left guard, Brad Bozeman at center, Mekhi Becton at right guard and Joe Alt [at] right tackle."

The Chargers then rolled out that offensive line at Monday's practice, save for Jamaree Salyer sliding in for Becton at right guard.

Becton has missed recent practices but Harbaugh said Monday that whatever is keeping him out is in the "not severe category."

Harbaugh didn't officially say the starting offensive line is cemented, but he also gave his strongest public comments yet for keeping Johnson and Bozeman in the spots they were in last season.

"The versatility that's been created has been really good," Harbaugh said of the competition between the two. "The versatility of Boze playing guard has been good, we'll have that in our back pocket.

"But at every step of this process, Zion has shown a real upside, high ceiling to have the versatility to be a center as well as be a starting guard," Harbaugh added.

Harbaugh later noted that he expects Johnson to play center in Sunday's preseason game against the Saints.

"Probably will play more snaps in this game with Zion at center," Harbaugh said. "Just to have more of those game reps."

Overall, Harbaugh raved about the position room, which includes Trey Pipkins III as the swing tackle, Salyer as the backup guard and Andre James as a strong depth piece at center.

"That's the way I see the depth chart there and I'm bullish on them," Harbaugh said. "They're doing a heck of a job."

2. Herbert throws 4 TDs in red zone

The Chargers had a shorter practice Monday but spent a considerable amount of time in the red zone.

That's where Justin Herbert did his best work as he tossed four total touchdowns on the day, each one to a different pass catcher.

Herbert started the drill on fire as he hit Jaylen Johnson for a roughly 20-yard score on the first play of a drill.

He later followed up with a pinpoint pass to JaQuae Jackson in the front of the end zone.

Herbert later connected with Oronde Gadsden on a 5-yard touchdown pass as the rookie tight end ran a beautiful out route to create separation against a defender.

Running back Nyheim Miller-Hines scored the final touchdown from Herbert on a 2-yard pass.

3. A look at kick return depth

Chargers wide receiver Derius Davis did not practice on Monday.

That led to increased reps for others on offense, hence the respective Johnson and Jackson touchdowns in the red zone.

But it also meant a chance for others to get in there for kick return reps, which the Chargers worked on toward the end of practice.

With Davis out, the Bolts rolled out multiple players including Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal, Jaret Patterson, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Trikweze Bridges, Luke Grimm, Dalevon Campbell and Jackson.

Davis was the kick returner on the Pro Football Writers of America All-AFC Team in 2024 after he tallied 19 kickoff returns for 524 yards, good for an average of 27.6 yards per return.
