Chargers Camp Report: Cameron Dicker Has Perfect Day in Tuesday's Practice

The Bolts are 15 practices through Chargers Training Camp.

The team held a short, padded session on Tuesday, going for roughly 75 minutes at The Bolt.

The team has an off day on Wednesday before resuming at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Here is the Chargers Camp Report from Tuesday's practice:

1. Dicker perfect on the afternoon

Cameron Dicker had his best day of camp as the Bolts head into their day off.

The Chargers kicker built on his solid performance this past Sunday and went a perfect 6-for-6, a feat that was more impressive considering he was kicking uprights that are narrower than regulation size.

After kicking from right to left for most of camp, Dicker tried his hand from left to right on Tuesday and put on a show.

"It's been good getting back in the swing of things," Dicker said on Tuesday. "Obviously, it's longer this year, so building up to Brazil and trying to be ready for that game."

He later added: "Still kind of fully getting in the swing of things, obviously still trying to figure out some things with kickoff as we lead into the season."

Following his kicking session, the kicker got some more reps with the kickoff team as well.

KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Nyheim Miller-Hines, Jaret Patterson, Raheim Sanders and Luke Grimm were all back receiving kicks as Dicker continues to work on that part of the game with the new kickoff rule change.

"I think with the new change, add another five yards on the return, it adds another level that you kind of got to play to now instead of just having to hit touchbacks," Dicker said. "I think we're getting there."

It was also a good day for the punting aspect as well, as JK Scott was booming kicks in the evening.

Scott took reps punting in different scenarios, but was usually inside his own 25-yard line.

The punter unleashed a number of impressive punts, including a handul that went much over the 50-yard mark.

Almost all of his kicks not only had the distance, but he was around his average hang time he had last year of 4.62 seconds, according to Pro Football Focus.

"JK has a lot of great strengths, he's elite in a lot of the things that he does. Just to see where his track record has been, all the capabilities," Chargers Special Teams Coordinator Ryan Ficken said. "I still think he's got a lot to go, in a good way, because he's just so talented.

"He's just still scratching the surface," Ficken added. "I'm excited for what he's going to be doing this coming year."

Scott finished his session punting from inside the 50-yard line as well, as he landed two inside the 15-yard line and the last one fielded by Ja'Sir Taylor inside the five.

Scott had three punts during last week's Hall of Fame Game for a total of 154 yards (51.3 avg), including two punts over 50 yards and the other inside the 20-yard line that led to a muffed punt.

2. Running it back in the red zone

The Bolts spent a lot of time down in the red zone once again.

After a couple of consecutive days with some emphasis there, they did so again on Tuesday as they worked through different situations and distances.

A lot of the plays in the red area came on the ground, where there was more of an emphasis there on this particular day and a lot less action through the air (more on that later).

But there were still a couple of pass plays that highlighted the session.

Facing a second-and 8 from the 22-yard line, Taylor Heinicke found undrafted rookie Stevo Klotz down the seam for a touchdown.

Quarterback Trey Lance later had his own touchdown from the 11-yard line as he rolled to his left before finding Brenden Rice, who found some open space in the end zone.

3. A physical run day

Not only was the day heavy in the red zone, part of that was also ample time spent on the run game.

The team spent some time on some 9-on-7 periods before moving to the red-zone session that also had a heavy run split as well.

The highlight of the period came courtesy of rookie Omarion Hampton, who made his way up the middle to score a touchdown with the offense facing a fourth-and 6 inside the 10-yard line.

Even Herbert got in on the action with the offense facing a first-and goal from the 9-yard line as he rolled to his right and took off for what was most likely a touchdown.

It wasn't only the offense getting the positive plays, however, the defense did have their fair share as well.

The red-zone session in particular saw a couple of splash plays by the defensive unit with the lone would-be sack of the session was attributed to Da'Shawn Hand with the offense facing a third-down situation on the edge of the red zone.

They closed out the team session with a bang as well, as both Khalil Mack and Denzel Perryman blew up plays for run stops with the offense marching inside the 10 on the final couple of plays of the period.

The Chargers look to build in both phases of the run in their next preseason game against the Saints after what was a solid day in that aspect.

The Bolts rushed for 121 yards in the big win while holding Detroit to just 93 yards in the preseason opener last week.
