Rashawn Slater is an elite player, but his 2024 season was perhaps the best football he's ever played.
As a result, the Chargers left tackle recently landed at No. 15 overall of Pro Football Focus' Top 50 players list, a group compiled by Dalton Wasserman and Trevor Sikkema.
PFF wrote about Slater:
Slater has been outstanding since entering the league in 2021, but his 2024 season was his best yet. He earned a 90.9 PFF grade — second only to Jordan Mailata — and ranked as the NFL's second-most valuable left tackle in PFF WAR. With Joe Alt now in the mix, the Chargers may soon field the league's premier tackle tandem.
Slater earned his second Pro Bowl selection in 2024 and likely should have made an All-Pro team, too.
He posted a 90.9 overall PFF grade this season, one of just two tackles and six offensive lineman to hit that mark among players with at least 500 snaps. In the past four seasons, only 12 total players have reached at least a 90.9 grade.
And Slater did so while being on an island roughly 65 percent of the time, according to PFF data.
Simply put, he is a standout player who also occupies one of the most important positions of the entire roster at left tackle.
Slater reported to training camp Wednesday and has been at practice the past two days even as his reps are in the midst of contract extension talks with the Chargers.
Justin Herbert shared his respect for Slater on Thursday.
"He's got a commitment to our team, and we all appreciate that," Herbert said.
