Why the Chargers Have the Most Interesting Primetime Games on 2025 NFL Schedule

Here is why NFL experts have games against the Raiders, Vikings and Eagles circled on their calendars

The Chargers 2025 regular season has taken shape.

After the NFL released every team's schedule, there's no doubt a lot of eyes will be on the Bolts who have five standalone games this year.

In fact, they even have some of the top games of the year under the lights.

Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr ranked his most interesting games on the 2025 schedule, with an early Bolts matchup on top of the list.

The Chargers visit to Las Vegas was first in his rankings, as it brings together a number of coaches who were in the collegiate ranks not too long ago.

Orr wrote:

It also features a Jim Harbaugh–Jesse Minter–Chip Kelly trifecta, giving us a look at three coaches who were integral parts of the past two collegiate national championships. For all three of them, it is also the second foray into professional football after going back to the college game. As NFL offenses continue to try to find some footing amid a time of transition, it's often the little wrinkles within these game plans that offer us relevant thoughts as to what college players are capable of and what offenses are going to look like at the NFL level for some time.

Not to mention the head coaching matchup that will surely grab most of the headlines heading into this Monday night game.

Harbaugh will lead his team into Las Vegas against a team coached by Pete Carroll for the first time since 2014, as the two coaches will meet again on NFL sidelines.

It's part of the reason NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman has this Week 2 battle as the No. 4 best primetime game on the schedule.

Bergman wrote:

This late Monday nighter -- Part II of a Disney network doubleheader -- will be not only Carroll's first game in Las Vegas, but also the debuts of Ashton Jeanty and Geno Smith in the Silver and Black at Allegiant Stadium. That it comes against Carroll's nemesis will only heighten the drama. The two coaches go way back, having been rivals in the Pac-10 (Harbaugh at Stanford, Carroll at USC) and the NFC West (Harbaugh in San Francisco, Carroll in Seattle). With Harbaugh entering his second season with the Bolts and Carroll back in the NFL after a year-long hiatus, the often-testy rivalry can finally be renewed. (A special treat: Carroll will turn 74 on Sept. 15, further solidifying himself as the oldest head coach in NFL history.)

The Chargers also have a Thursday Night Football game slated for Week 8 against the Vikings, the first time both teams have met in that time slot.

And all eyes will be on Harbaugh, Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter and other former Michigan staff going against their former Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan has the matchup between the former members of the 2023 National Championship team as his No. 1 Thursday Night Football game of the year.

Sullivan wrote:

This had to be the top game, right? First and foremost, it's a matchup between Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy and Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. Not too long ago, that coach-quarterback duo was on the same sideline, taking the college football world by storm and leading Michigan to a College Football Playoff National Championship. Now, they're adversaries, and it'll be fascinating to see how Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter (who was the DC at Michigan with Harbaugh and McCarthy) plan to attack the young quarterback. Outside of that subplot, this is simply a great matchup of two young teams. Minnesota boasts superstars on both sides of the ball, headlined by wideout Justin Jefferson. Meanwhile, the Chargers have Justin Herbert under center in an offense that features 2024 breakout star Ladd McConkey and first-round rookie running back Omarion Hampton. I'm expecting plenty of fireworks here.

But perhaps the most eye-drawing game on the Bolts schedule is their final primetime game.

The Athletic's Daniel Popper circled the Chargers hosting the Super Bowl Champion Eagles in Week 14 on Monday Night Football as his must-watch game of the team's schedule, as it will be a big litmus test for a variety of reasons.

Popper wrote:

The Chargers have often talked about being a physically dominant team, particularly in the trenches. They showed flashes of that philosophy in Harbaugh's first season, but they never fully realized the vision. Most notably on offense, they struggled to run the ball consistently, and they were manhandled up front in a playoff loss to the Houston Texans. The Eagles are a physically dominant team on both sides of the trenches. This will be the ultimate test for the Chargers. How much closer are they really to playing in Harbaugh's image?
