Keenan Allen is back to doing Keenan Allen things.
The veteran wide receiver has jumped right into the fold, participating in practice and team drills since his arrival last week.
And his connection with quarterback Justin Herbert hasn't skipped a beat — even a new offensive system — as he's hauled in a number of passes in team drills just like old times.
He's been doing exactly what Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman and the rest of the staff expected of him so far.
"It's been really great, just his presence," Roman said about Allen on Tuesday. "His presence, relationship and chemistry with Justin. Then the brass tax, he looks good out there.
"Always knew he was a great player, but now he's here and he's proving it once again." Roman added. "He's doing a really nice job."
The presence he's brought to the team has also shown up in more than just on the field work.
Quentin Johnston saw it up close as he was the veteran's teammate as a rookie when Allen went on to have a historic 2023 season.
It was like he and Allen never stopped being teammates.
"I came in and he was here," Johnston said on Tuesday. "It's always good to have a great football player like that around … having somebody like that on the field with you is always good."
He later added: "Picking it right back up like he never left."
The receiver room was a rather young group prior to the signing of Allen as Jalen Reagor was the most experienced player in the room following Mike Williams' retirement.
Now the dynamics have changed a little bit says Johnston, as they have leaned on the veteran when they have any questions.
"They didn't really change a whole lot, but at the same time just acknowledged him being in there," Johnston said. "We'll be going through film or something and lean back on him if we have any questions since he has played as long as he had. Kind of just pick his brain."
And for the players he didn't play with before, they've enjoyed the benefits of getting to learn firsthand from one of the best route runners in the game.
Second-year wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who showed off his route-running repertoire as a rookie, has embraced the opportunity as he's spent some time on the practice field talking to his new teammate and getting tips.
"Just picking his brain, he's done it for a long time at a high level," McConkey said about Allen. "Any knowledge I can gain, I'm going to do it. Just talking through routes, stuff like that, seeing what he's seeing, how he runs his routes.
"I feel like I'd be dumb if I didn't pick his brain," McConkey added.
McConkey said he's studied the veteran since before he became his teammate, opting to watch his work in previous seasons and techniques both as a rookie and this year.
Now getting to watch him up close, he's been able to see in person what's made him one of the best in the game for a long time.
"Very decisive, and he's smart. He's super smart, he knows how to win based off leverage," McConkey said. "He doesn't just have to run by you, he can set you up at the top, stick and he has great hands.
"There's contested catches all over the place in the league, and I think he does that at a high level," McConkey added.
As Allen continues to get back into the mix and up to speed on the offense, the task is now finding a way to maximize the unit.
McConkey did a lot of damage in his historic rookie season from the slot but also showed the ability to be a great threat on the outside. It's similar to Allen, who has showed the same in his 12-year career.
The second-year receiver is confident about the fit as they've shown they can be versatile in whatever is asked of them.
"The great thing about our offense is we can all move around," McConkey said. "One by three formations, whoever it might be, me, Q, Keenan, [Reagor], whoever is out there, we can all rotate and be in different positions and scheme it up the way they want and have whoever run what route then we can rotate and run another way.
"I think that's something good about our receiver room," McConkey continued. "We're all versatile, can move around, play different positions. I think that only helps us."
McConkey later added: "Wherever they line me up, give me the best chance to get open and get the ball, I'm all for it."
And Roman concurred, as more pass catchers are a great thing.
"I think it'll create some flexibility for us and also make us stronger," Roman said. "Love having good players, and [Allen is] a great one."
