The 2026 NFL Draft is likely not at the forefront of anyone's mind right now.
But ESPN's Ben Solak recently put together a fun exercise in which picked the best player in NFL history at all 262 draft picks.
Solak's daunting endeavor included a handful of Chargers, including the ESPN analyst going with Dan Fouts at No. 64.
Solak wrote:
Fouts is the only 64th pick with a gold jacket, which gives him an easy inside track. How about four straight seasons leading the league in passing yardage and an entire career spent quarterbacking the San Diego Chargers? Pretty good player for our final second-round pick. (He was technically a third-round pick due to there being fewer teams in 1973, but whatever.)
Fouts, a 1973 draft pick, was perhaps the most prolific quarterback of his era. He threw for 43,040 career yards and 254 touchdowns, earning a pair of First-Team All-Pro honors and six Pro Bowl nods.
One of Fouts' top targets in the Air Coryell offense — wide receiver Charlie Joiner — was Solak's pick at No. 93.
He wrote:
An Oilers draft pick who found his home in San Diego with the Chargers, Joiner has his No. 18 jersey retired and a gold jacket on his shoulders for his longevity. He missed one game in his final 13 seasons. Joiner was dominant in the aggressive, pass-first offense captained by Dan Fouts in the late 1970s.
Joiner finished his career with 750 catches for 12,146 yards and 65 touchdowns.
Numerous other Bolts were mentioned, including quarterback Drew Brees at No. 32, guard Ed White (No. 39) and wide receiver Keenan Allen at No. 76.
Running back Darren Sproles (No. 130) and linebacker Woodrow Lowe (No. 131) were back-to-back selections by Solak, who also tabbed offensive tackle Billy Shields at No. 136.
Safety Rodney Harrison, who was recently announced to the Chargers Hall of Fame, was the pick at No. 145.
Harrison, a 1994 fifth-round draft pick out of Western Illinois, helped the Bolts reach Super Bowl XXIX as a rookie.
He played nine seasons for the Chargers, appearing in 123 career games with 97 starts. He was a two-time Pro Bowler with the Bolts and earned a First-Team All-Pro honor, too.
