Why Tre' Harris is Focused on Daily Development Early in His Rookie Year

It didn't take long for Tre’ Harris to notice what it was like catching passes from Justin Herbert.

"Whenever I first got out there, before even minicamp, for OTAs with the vets, I immediately knew he was different," Harris told reporters on Monday.

Harris, the Chargers 2025 second-round pick, has been off and running during his first couple of months in powder blue.

The Mississippi product flashed his receiving ability throughout last week's minicamp as he continues his transition into the pros.

It's safe to say he's enjoyed how much easier the quarterback has made his transition when they're on the field.

"His ball placement, his attention to detail with everything is supreme," Harris said. "I'm super excited to be able to play with a quarterback like that."

He later added: "Every throw he's made to me has been right on the money. If it's on the money, I'm going to make the catch."

From getting used to the NFL schedule to moving to the West Coast, it's been a full transition in a multitude of ways for the rookie.

But arguably one of the most important, and biggest from now through training camp, is getting down the new offensive scheme he's in.

Harris talked about his biggest challenge about learning the playbook so far, as he's been hard at work to try and get it down as much as he can.

"For me, the biggest challenge is just learning the different terminology," Harris said. "You want to call it a hitch, but it's called something else. Certain different routes and just calling it the right terminology.

"Just understanding it and putting it into your brain and making each thing connect," Harris added. "That's really been the biggest point of emphasis I've been working on. Making sure whenever I get this play call, it sticks in my brain and I'm not thinking about it or second-guessing myself."

Harris has been able to work closely with wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, who has been instrumental to trying to achieve that and more.

The receiver spoke glowingly about Lal and what they've been able to work on in these early stages.

That includes looking at the game a different way, which has helped him tremendously as he continues to develop.

"One thing he taught me already is just speed off the ball and just being super fast into the defense and not worrying about the defense," Harris said. "Not letting the defense dictate your route.

"It's not, 'I have to get open.' They got to cover me," Harris later added. "That's the mindset I've taken from him, that's the mindset I'm real glad to get from him."

Even when the work on the field and daily responsibilities are done, Harris has spent his time in El Segundo looking for more to do.

"At times, I'm just wandering around the building like, 'What else can I do for the day?'" Harris said. "I usually end up finding something, whether it's watching film, getting extra treatment or just going out on the field and doing extra."

He later added: "I'm usually always catching that late bus to go back to the hotel."

It's been a common theme the Bolts have seen from their rookies so far since they've arrived.

Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh praised the rookie class last week for their work ethic and always looking to go the extra mile to continue their growth.

Harris echoed the sentiment as he's noticed the same thing — everyone is trying to make their mark.

"For us, that's something I kind of want to give praise to the entire rookie class," Harris said. "We're always looking for extra to do.

"We all understand that we kind of have to play catchup in this situation," Harris added. "We're all looking to find a way to contribute to the team."

And as he continues to learn on the fly from now until the season, Harris is making sure he takes advantage of everything at his disposal each day.

"That's kind of the big thing I'm just taking each day, just learning as much as possible from my coach, Coach Sanjay, and also from the vets in the room and also from Justin," Harris said. "That's really my whole approach, learn as much as possible each day."
