A pair of Chargers recently took their skills to the chess board for a great cause.

Justin Herbert and Rashawn Slater took part in the fourth edition of BlitzChamps, a chess tournament featuring eight current and former NFL players facing off in head-to-head blitz chess for a $100,000 charitable prize pool.

This year's tournament included the likes of Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, former cornerback Richard Sherman, Saints safety Justin Reid and others in addition to the two Chargers stars. The players played online on Chess.com and the event was live streamed on their YouTube channel.

The tournament format was an eight-player double-elimination knockout bracket, which was a best-of-two. After Round 1, the double-elimination format split them into a winner's bracket and a loser's bracket.

The two Chargers battled it out as Herbert finished the tournament in third place and Slater in seventh.

Herbert's afternoon got started with a 2-1 win over New England wide receiver Mack Hollins to advance to the next round to face Reid, the defending champion.

After falling to Reid in the winner's semifinal, he bounced back with a 1.5-0.5 win over Sherman to make it into the top four before beating Hollins once again in the next round to advance into the final three.

Herbert was then defeated by Murray with a close 2-1 result, finishing the afternoon in third place of the tournament. Reid would go on to win the whole thing for a second-straight year.

The Chargers quarterback's third place finish earned $15,000 in support of Para Los Niños, an L.A.-based organization that brings together education, early intervention, mental health, public health, community engagement, and leadership development.

Slater, meanwhile, won a $5,000 prize for The A21 Campaign, a non-profit organization that brings awareness and fights human trafficking.
