5 Takeaways: The Top Storylines for Chargers 2025 Home Games

5TakesHomeGames

The Chargers 2025 schedule is hot off the presses.

And while we did an analysis of the Chargers schedule Wednesday, it's time to take a deeper dive into the home games.

Here are five takeaways from the Chargers home schedule:

1. Week 3 opener at SoFi Stadium

The Chargers get an AFC West trifecta to open the season with a game against the Chiefs in Brazil and a Week 2 tilt with the Raiders in primetime.

But the most intriguing game of the three could come in Week 3 as the Bolts host the Broncos at SoFi Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. (PT) on September 21.

The Chargers swept the Broncos last season but both teams made the playoffs as Wild Card squads in 2024.

Expect another fierce game that comes down to the wire between these two AFC West rivals.

As for Week 3 being a true home game? You have to go back to 1997 to find the last time the Chargers played their home opener in Week 3.

The Broncos will make a rare September trip to Southern California, too. This is the earliest the Bolts have hosted the Broncos since the 2003 season when they did so in Week 2.

2. Primetime in back-to-backs

With Week 1 being in Brazil, that means the rest of the Chargers schedule is split up eight home games and eight on the road.

The Chargers have a pair of back-to-back games at home throughout the season.

The first is Weeks 7 (Colts) and 8 (Vikings), followed by Weeks 13 (Raiders) and 14 (Eagles).

The irony there? Both of the final games on those two-game stretches are in primetime.

The Bolts host the Vikings on Thursday Night Football in Week 8, which means they get a mini bye just before the halfway point of the season.

The Chargers game against the Eagles is then on Monday Night Football in Week 14.

An interesting fact: the Chargers will play their first-ever primetime games against Minnesota and Philadelphia this season.

Let's hope the Chargers have some home cooking up their sleeve for the bright lights in primetime.

3. Welcoming the champs

The toughest game on the Chargers home slate? That one likely belongs in Week 14 against the Eagles.

Add in the fact that this one is on Monday Night Football and all eyes will be on this potential slugfest.

Philadelphia has crafted a simple yet effective formula for success in recent years: dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Sound familiar? Yes, that is exactly what Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh is looking to build here in Southern California.

This will be a great litmus test for the Bolts to see where they stand against the league's elite teams.

As for recent history, the Chargers have faced the defending Super Bowl champs the following season 17 times since the 2000 Ravens and are 8-9 in such games. The Bolts were at home in 10 of those 17 games, with five being on primetime.

Four out of those five primetime games against the defending champions were on Sunday Night Football and one was on Thursday Night Football, meaning the one versus the Eagles will the first on Monday night.

They are 3-2 against defending champs on primetime and played three out of those five primetime games at home.

4. Here comes Houston

One of the Chargers most anticipated home games is the final one on their regular-season schedule.

The Bolts will welcome the Texans to SoFi Stadium in Week 17. The date and time of that game are to be determined.

These teams met in the playoffs last season, of course, with the Chargers falling by double digits in Houston.

It wouldn't be a surprise if either team can potentially clinch a playoff spot in this game, or perhaps one or both of the teams have already secured a berth.

Either way, you know the Chargers will be hungry for redemption against the team that knocked them out of the dance in January.

Of note: this will be Houston's first-ever game at SoFi Stadium.

5. The young QBs

There were six quarterbacks taken within the first 12 picks of the 2024 NFL Draft last April.

The Chargers will meet three of them — Bo Nix, J.J. McCarthy and Jayden Daniels — at SoFi Stadium this fall.

The Bolts will see Nix first and are looking to remain unbeaten against him at home. The Chargers scored a thrilling 34-27 primetime home win over Denver in 2024.

Washington's trip to SoFi Stadium will be a homecoming of sorts for Daniels, who grew up in nearby San Bernardino.

The Bolts will certainly be on high alert against the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year who put up 4,459 total yards and 31 total touchdowns last season.

The storyline surrounding McCarthy is obvious. He played for Harbaugh at Michigan and helped the Wolverines win a national title.

But don't overlook the chess match between McCarthy and Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter, who was also on Michigan's staff when the quarterback was in Ann Arbor.

Games against these three young quarterbacks should be fun to watch in 2024. And that doesn't even count the likes of signal callers such as Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts and C.J. Stroud coming to town.
