Pair of Former Chargers Assistant Coaches to be Honored by Pro Football Hall of Fame

A pair of former Chargers assistant coaches will be honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.

Ted Cottrell and Bobb McKittrick are among three individuals who will be honored from the Assistant Coaches category at the 2026 Awards of Excellence program.

The duo will be honored June 24-25 in Canton, Ohio along with honorees from the Athletic Trainers, Public Relations Directors, Equipment Managers and Film/Video Directors categories.

Cottrell spent the 2007 season and part of the 2008 season as the Chargers Defensive Coordinator.

Considered the innovator of the 3-4 defense, Cottrell spent 24 total seasons in the NFL and coached for six teams.

McKittrick, meanwhile, was a renowned offensive line coach who spent nearly 30 in the NFL.

He was the Chargers offensive line coach from 1974 to 1978 before spending the next 21 season in San Francisco, where he won five Super Bowls with the 49ers.

Cottrell and McKittrick will be honored alongside longtime special teams coach Mike Westhoff.

Their selections brings the number of assistant coaches honored to 17 over the past five years.
