The National Football League unveiled the complete schedule for its 100th season today, and the Los Angeles Chargers will open the 2019 regular season Sunday, Sept. 8 at home against the Indianapolis Colts and close out the year on the road with a divisional tilt Sunday, Dec. 29 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In the weeks between, the Chargers host two Sunday Night Football games against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6 and Minnesota Vikings in Week 15 and will be featured on Monday Night Football when they travel to Mexico City for a Week 11 home game against the Chiefs. The Bolts will play a fourth national TV game in Week 10 when they visit the Bay Area for a meeting with the Oakland Raiders on Thursday Night Football.
The Chargers kick off the season against the Colts for the second time in team history Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:05 p.m. on ROKiT Field at Dignity Health Sports Park. The Chargers have won six of their last eight overall meetings against the Colts and three of the last four at home, including a thrilling 23-17 Wild Card overtime win in 2009.
The Bolts then make their first road trip of the season as they head to Detroit on Sept. 15 to face the Lions. The Chargers have won seven of the last eight meetings and are 2-4 in games played in Detroit. This will be the first trip for the Chargers to Ford Field since 2011.
The Chargers return home to face the Houston Texans on Sunday, Sept. 22 before trekking across the country to South Beach for a meeting with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 29. The Bolts are 5-1 against the Texans while the trip to Miami marks the first of two games played in the state of Florida in 2019.
In Week 5, the Chargers open divisional play at home against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Oct. 6. Los Angeles holds a 34-25 regular-season home record against Denver. The Bolts beat Denver at home in 2017, 21-0, marking the first time Denver was shutout since 1992.
Week 6 marks the first of two Sunday Night Football games at Dignity Health Sports Park as the Chargers host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 13. Each of the last seven games between the two teams has been decided by 10 points or less. The Chargers won their Week 13 matchup last year against the Steelers, also on Sunday Night Football, with a last-second game-winning field goal.
After the two-game homestand, the Bolts face the first of two back-to-back sets of road games on their schedule. Los Angeles heads to Tennessee for an Oct. 20 meeting with the Titans and then will take on the reigning NFC North champion Chicago Bears on Oct. 27. The Chargers have won two in a row and 10 of the last 11 against the Titans, including a 20-19 win in London last season. The Bolts will play in the Windy City for the first time since 2011.
The second half of the season begins with a home contest against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Nov. 3. The two teams will be meeting for just the 12th time in series history and the first since Philip Rivers set team marks for single-game pass attempts (65), completions (43) and passing yards (503) at Green Bay in October of 2015.
The Chargers then jump back into division play when they head to Oakland to face the Raiders on Thursday, Nov. 7. The Chargers won the matchup at Oakland last season by 14 points, the highest margin of victory in the series in Oakland since a 27-0 win in 2006. Los Angeles has won 11 of the past 15 games against the Raiders on the road.
The Chargers will remain in the division when they host Kansas City under the lights of Mexico City's Estadio Azteca Nov. 18 on Monday Night Football. The contest marks the second-straight season that the Chargers will play an international regular-season game and is the team's first-ever game in Mexico. The Chargers return from Mexico to a bye week before hitting the road for two straight games. The Bolts will first head to Mile High for a meeting with the Denver Broncos on Dec. 1 – the Chargers downed the Broncos 23-9 last season to mark their first victory in Denver since 2013 – and then head back to Florida for a Week 14 battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Dec. 8. This will be the Chargers fifth trip to Jacksonville in the last nine seasons.
In Week 15 the Chargers will once again play host to Sunday Night Football when they welcome the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 15. The matchup will mark only the third home game for the Bolts against Minnesota since 1981. The series record is tied at 6-6, but the Chargers hold a 3-1 advantage at home.
The Chargers will close out their home schedule when they host the Oakland Raiders in Week 16 on either Saturday, Dec. 21 or Sunday, Dec. 22. The exact date, time and network will be announced after Week 8. The Chargers have won 14 of the past 17 home contests against the Raiders, scoring 20-plus points in all but four of those matchups. Los Angeles continued that trend in 2018 with a 16-point home win in Week 5.
The regular season concludes at Arrowhead with the Bolts facing the Chiefs on Sunday, Dec. 29. The Chargers look to win back-to-back games in Kansas City for the first time since 2012-13 after a 14-point come-from-behind win in the fourth quarter last season on Thursday Night Football. Six of the past nine games in Kansas City have been decided by seven or fewer points.
