Los Angeles Chargers Agree to Terms with All-Pro Rashawn Slater to Multi-Year Contract Extension

The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms with tackle Rashawn Slater to a multi-year contract extension.

Since being selected by Los Angeles in the first round (13th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft, Slater has started all 52 career appearances at left tackle, serving as the blind-side protector for quarterback Justin Herbert, who has set numerous league-wide passing records with Slater's aid. In 2024, he started 16 games including the postseason, helping keep Herbert upright for the offense to commit just eight turnovers, setting a franchise record and tying for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history.

As a rookie in 2021, Slater started all 16 appearances at left tackle, earning second-team All-Pro status from The Associated Press after leading a front that protected for the No. 4-ranked total offense in the NFL (390.2 yards per game), as Herbert threw for an AFC-best 32 passing touchdowns. Slater was also named the starting left tackle for the AFC in the Pro Bowl becoming the first rookie tackle to be named an all-star since 2012.

A native of Sugar Land, Texas, Slater started 37-of-38 games over three seasons at Northwestern (2017-19), twice earning All-Big Ten Conference recognition. After starting 12-of-13 appearances at right tackles a true freshman in 2017, Slater started all 14 games at right tackle for the Wildcats in 2018, helping lead the program to the Big Ten Championship Game. In his final season at Northwestern, Slater started all 11 games at left tackle, allowing zero sacks and receiving all-conference honors.
