The Los Angeles Chargers today agreed to terms on a contract extension with offensive lineman Trevor Penning.
Acquired via trade during the 2025 season, Penning started four-of-seven regular-season games played with the Bolts after starting six games with New Orleans at left guard. He contributed to an offense that eclipsed 150 rushing yards in three of his games played, including 192 against the Raiders in Week 13. Penning helped block for quarterback Justin Herbert to earn a Pro Bowl nod after throwing for throwing for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns, while ranking tied for No. 3 in the NFL with four 300-yard passing games.
Penning entered the professional ranks as the No. 19 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft by New Orleans, starting 29-of-46 games played with the Saints. He started all 17 games in 2024, blocking on a unit that saw running back Alvin Kamara total 1,493 yards from scrimmage (950 rushing, 543 receiving) and eight touchdowns (six rushing, two receiving). Over four seasons at Northern Iowa (2018-21), Penning started 33-of-37 career games played. In 2021, he was a consensus first-team All-American and the only offensive lineman in the country to be named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is annually awarded to the FCS Offensive Player of the Year.
