Game Recap: Herbert, Defense Help Chargers Top Titans For Week 9 Win

ChargersTitansGameRecap

The Chargers are 6-3 after a 27-20 win over the Titans on Sunday.

Here's a game recap from Week 9:

Turning Point

The Chargers defense wouldn't be denied.

Just past the midway point of the third quarter, the Bolts led by a field goal but the Titans faced third-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

A Tennessee third-down run was stuffed when Khalil Mack brought down running back Tony Pollard for no gain.

The Chargers rose up in the shadow of their own end zone again as Elijah Molden and Denzel Perryman teamed up to deny Pollard on fourth down at the goal line.

With the three-point lead still intact, Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense went to work.

The unit put together a 15-play, 99-yard touchdown drive that might have well been 99.5 yards considering the circumstances.

Herbert began the drive by hitting Oronde Gadsden for 14 yards before Keenan Allen picked up 10 yards on third down to move the chains.

Jaret Patterson chipped in on the ground with 18 rushing yards on three straight carries before Herbert later hit Quentin Johnston for 23 yards to get into the red zone.

Herbert then capped off the drive himself as he scrambled in for a 1-yard touchdown drive — ending it with an emphatic slide — as the Bolts pushed their lead to 27-17 early in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Odafe Oweh led the charge on the ensuing Titans drive as he sacked Cam Ward twice to force a quick Titans punt.

Top Play

Johnston didn't have a catch in a Week 8 win against the Vikings.

But he made a superb grab — on an incredible throw — near the midway point of the second quarter.

With the ball at the 19-yard line, Johnston ran a precise corner route to find some space between a pair of Titans defenders.

Herbert, meanwhile, dropped a perfect pass in the back of the end zone that just evaded the reach of a defensive back.

The touchdown was Johnston's team-leading sixth touchdown catch of the season.

Johnston led the Bolts with eight touchdown catches in 2024.

Key Stat

The Titans offense entered the game with the league's worst third-down offense at 29.91 percent.

The Bolts made note of that ... and then dominated there by limiting Tennessee to just one conversion on nine tries.

Henley and Oweh each had sacks for the Chargers on third down.
