Game Recap: Chargers Can't Complete 4th-Quarter Rally in Week 4 Loss to Giants

GameRecapW4

The Chargers are 3-1 after they couldn't complete a fourth-quarter rally Sunday.

The Bolts fell 21-18 to the Giants for their first loss of the season.

Here's a game recap from Week 4.

Turning Point

The Chargers hadn't played their best football Sunday but were hanging around and trailed by just three points midway through the third quarter.

The tide appeared to turn late in the third quarter when Justin Herbert was intercepted and it was returned inside the 5-yard line, leading to a New York touchdown and 2-point conversion.

Down 21-10, however, Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton took things into his own hands by ripping off a 54-yard touchdown run to get the Bolts right back in it.

Herbert ran in the ensuing 2-point conversion himself to put the Bolts down just 21-18 entering the fourth quarter.

The Chargers defense later forced a Giants punt before the offense took over at their own 9 with just over 12 minutes left in regulation.

But the Bolts went three-and-out before a 31-yard punt set New York up with good field position at the Chargers 48.

The Chargers defense then rose to the challenge as the Giants faced first-and-goal at the 4 but came away with no points.

Tuli Tuipulotu came up with a massive run stop on third-and-goal at the 1 before the Chargers forced an incompletion for a turnover on downs.

Hampton then jumpstarted the Chargers ensuing drive with a 29-yard run on third down but the Bolts pass protection couldn't hold up as Herbert was sacked on third down to force a punt.

The Giants converted on a third-down pass on the ensuing drive as the Chargers used up all of their timeouts. New York bled the clock before the Chargers last gasp effort fell short.

Top Play

The Chargers got off to a slow and sloppy start Sunday as they were hampered by miscues including penalties and dropped passes.

But down 13-3 late in the second quarter, Justin Herbert and Quentin Johnston injected a spark into the offense with a gorgeous touchdown connection.

Johnston was a perfect double move down the sideline before Herbert dropped a dime to the star wide receiver who has been on fire to start the 2025 season.

Johnston's touchdown was his fourth in four games as the 2023 first-round pick continued his emergence as one of the league's best wide receivers.

Key Stat

The Chargers had outscored their opponents 20-3 so far in the first quarter so far this season but lost the opening frame against the Giants. Not only was the Chargers offense shut out in the first quarter, the Bolts defense also allowed its first touchdown of the first quarter.
