In preseason game No. 3, the Los Angeles Chargers fell to the Seattle Seahawks 23-15 Saturday night from ROKiT Field at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Several Chargers starters on both sides of the ball did not play, including quarterback Philip Rivers, wide receiver Keenan Allen, defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, and linebacker Thomas Davis, among others.
Rookie quarterback Easton Stick led the Chargers to two fourth-quarter touchdown drives. He went 12-of-16 for 82 yards and a pair of scores – one being a 4-yard rush.
The lone score of the first quarter came on a 12-play, 58-yard drive led by Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who started the game in place of Rivers. Michael Badgley's 40-yard field goal gave Los Angeles a 3-0 lead.
Seattle responded with a 12-play scoring drive of their own. Russell Wilson and Co. went 84 yards, in large part to 20- and 30-yard receptions by wide receiver Tyler Lockett. On fourth-and-1, L.A. native Rashaad Penny punched in a 3-yard touchdown to give the Seahawks a 7-3 lead.
Seattle added two more scores in the second quarter, including a 1-yard touchdown run by C.J. Prosise. Jason Myers' 58-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the half gave the Seahawks a 16-3 lead.
Taylor finished 6-of-9 for 61 yards – including 34 rushing yards on six carries – before giving way to Cardale Jones.
Jones' second completion of the game went to wide receiver Artavis Scott for 31 yards. It was Scott's second straight game with a 31-yard completion. He led the Chargers with 66 yards on four receptions.
Stick, who entered the game late in the third quarter, threw an 8-yard touchdown to wide receiver Andre Patton in the fourth. It was Stick's first career NFL touchdown pass and Patton's second score in as many games.
Rookie linebacker Drue Tranquill led the Chargers with nine tackles. Undrafted rookie linebacker Chris Peace had Los Angeles' only sack of the night.
Up next: The Chargers close the preseason next Thursday, August 29 against the San Francisco 49ers. Kickoff from Levi's Stadium is at 7 p.m. Pacific.
