Tony Dungy: Joey Bosa the 'Missing Ingredient' to Chargers' D

Hall of Fame Head Coach Tony Dungy joined a special Sunday Night Football edition of Chargers Weekly, the official podcast of the team.

Dungy, an analyst on NBC's Football Night in America, previewed Sunday's matchup between the Chargers and Steelers, gave his thoughts on the return of defensive end Joey Bosa and more. Highlights from the conversation (66-minute mark) are below.

Dungy on the job Head Coach Anthony Lynn has done in his second season with the Chargers (70:25):

"He's been very, very good this year, but I thought he was outstanding last year. Last year kind of reminded me of my first year in Tampa. We started off 0-5 and then we went to 1-8, but by the end of the year our nucleus, our foundation was set and the guys were playing well, and we won some games at the end of the year, and it catapulted us into the playoffs the next year. I thought that was just what was going to happen here. The team lost some games last year at the beginning that could have really taken the heart out of the group, but they continued to play hard; by the end of the year nobody really wanted to play them and I thought for sure this would be a playoff team, just the way they finished up."

On the return of Bosa (72:15)

"Joey Bosa is just one of those guys who can change things. Again, I compare it to our team our Super Bowl year. Bob Sanders was out for a long period of time and when he came back, it just elevated our whole defensive play enough to get us to the Super Bowl. I think Joey is one of those type of talents, where you've got a good defense, you've got guys who play hard, they're very sound. Now you bring that missing ingredient, that guy who can make that big play just when you need it. I think he can take this defense to another level."

Listen to the entire episode, which also features interviews with NBC's Peter King, Michele Tafoya and Al Michaels. Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette also gave their thoughts on Sunday night's AFC showdown.
