3 Chargers Players to Watch Against Cowboys in Week 16

PTWWeek16

The Chargers are headed to Texas riding a three-game win streak.

The Bolts will face the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Week 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (PT).

Here are three players to watch on Sunday:

1. S Derwin James, Jr.

What does the safety have in store for an encore?

Last time we saw him on the field, James made the biggest play of the game last week in Kansas City, hauling in the game-sealing interception in the win over the Chiefs while defending Travis Kelce down the field.

Last year's Second-Team All-Pro has enjoyed a stellar season once again this year, starting all 14 games and ranking second on the team in total tackles (80) as well as occupying his role in slot and in the box at a high level.

He's also been as disruptive as ever tied for the third-most total pressures (12) among all safeties and tied for the lead in defensive stops (tackles that constitute a "failure" for the offense).

James has also had one of his better seasons in coverage of his career allowing a 68.9 passer rating when targeted, the best of his career and seventh among all safeties with at least 500 snaps.

This week, James and the unit will go up against a dynamic Dallas offense that has plenty of firepower.

"I think it's arguably the best offense we've played," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "Present a lot of challenges."

For James specifically, this week's tight end he'll be up against is Jake Ferguson, who has found a knack for making himself available for the Dallas offense.

Ferguson ranks second on the Cowboys with 77 receptions, a mark that is also second in the NFL among his position.

According to Pro Football Focus, 354 of his 570 receiving yards this season have come in the middle of the field between zero and 20 yards.

James and the Chargers defense will be key in defending the middle of the field as well as the Cowboys run game with Javonte Williams leading the charge as the NFL's sixth leading rusher.

2. G Zion Johnson

The guard has been a stalwart for the Chargers offense.

Johnson has played all 944 offensive snaps for the Bolts so far this year as he's put together an effective season in Year 4.

The Chargers left guard ranks second among all interior linemen, and first in the AFC, in ESPN's run-block win rate at 81 percent.

He also has a 97.7 percent pass-block efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus, which would mark the highest of his career so far if it holds.

The Chargers offensive line has been making it work amid the slew of injuries, and they face yet another test this week against the Cowboys front that includes Quinnen Williams, Osa Odighizuwa and Kenny Clark.

In the five games since the Cowboys acquired Williams at the trade deadline, he leads all interior defensive lineman with 29 total pressures, while Odighizuwa is tied for sixth with 18.

"That's a completely different defense once they made some moves and it's a totally different dynamic," Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman said. "I don't even care about what happened in September.

"I've peeked at it, but I've thrown it out and looking at what's happened recently with their new personnel," Roman added.

Williams missed Wednesday's practice with a concussion but was limited in Thursday's session.

It remains to be seen whether the trio will all be ready to go Sunday in Dallas, but when they're all healthy they have proven to be difference makers moving around the interior, meaning Johnson and the rest of the Bolts offensive line will be tasked with slowing them down.

3. CB Donte Jackson

Jackson has been having himself quite a season in his first year in Los Angeles.

The veteran cornerback has been a game-changer in the secondary, leading the team with 12 passes defensed and tied for the most interceptions with four.

He's been among the best not only on the team, but in the entire NFL.

Jackson leads all cornerbacks with at least 300 snaps this year in passer rating against allowing a 33.5 rating.

"He's getting better and better, honestly," Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter said of Jackson last week. "He's getting really detailed in his approach and how he sees things, how he sees routes.

Minter later added: "We sort of hoped and saw that could be the type of guy he could be in our defense. Particularly in the last few weeks, it's really come to fruition."

He'll be a focal point this week as they prepare for arguably one of the top wide receiver duos in the league in Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens.

Both of the Cowboys' receivers rank in the top eight in receiving yards, Pickens at 1,212 and Lamb at 976 despite missing three games.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott has been getting the ball to his playmakers early and often, and Jackson will be a big part in trying to slow down the high-flying Dallas offense in the secondary.

"Those guys are big plays waiting to happen no matter if you're getting the ball downfield to them, you're doing something quick," Jackson said. "Whatever you're doing, you're getting the ball in Nos. 3 and 88's hands."
