3 Chargers Players to Watch Against Texans in Week 17

3PTWTexans

The Chargers are back home on a four-game win streak for their regular-season finale.

The Bolts will face the Texans at SoFi Stadium in Week 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (PT).

Here are three players to watch on Saturday:

1. WR Ladd McConkey

McConkey found his way back in the end zone in Week 16 against the Cowboys.

Facing a second down on the brink of the red zone, quarterback Justin Herbert found a wide-open McConkey for a 25-yard touchdown, his sixth score of the season.

Now the Texans defense awaits the second-year receiver, a unit McConkey found success against in his only matchup against them.

The receiver had a historic performance against in their playoff matchup last January, setting a rookie playoff record with 197 receiving yards and a touchdown on nine receptions.

That included an 86-yard score in which McConkey made a contested grab and beat the Houston defense to the end zone for the longest touchdown of his career to date.

He matches up against the high-level unit once again, this time potentially seeing someone he didn't see in their previous matchup.

With McConkey playing the second-most snaps among wide receivers in the slot, he will be lined up at times against Houston's Jalen Pitre, who leads Houston in snaps at the slot and missed last year's matchup.

Pitre has played in 12 games this season and racked up four interceptions and 11 passes defensed, so he is disruptive when the ball is in the air. He also leads all secondary players in Pro Football Focus' coverage grade with an 89.7.

It will be a battle to watch when they are lined up against one another as another big day from McConkey could be big for the Bolts defense on Saturday.

2. LB Troy Dye

The veteran linebacker steps into a big spot as he will likely step in as the starter in the middle of the Chargers defense.

The NFL announced Monday that Denzel Perryman has been suspended for two games after he was called for unnecessary roughness in Sunday's win over the Cowboys. Perryman's appeal was denied on Wednesday.

This means Dye will see his defensive role increase and be among the focal points at linebacker next to Daiyan Henley.

Dye has played 14 games this year, including starting five of them when Perryman was on Injured Reserve, logging 55 total tackles, four tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a sack.

He has become a valuable member for the unit and will be leaned upon for the final stretch of the regular season.

"We've won a lot of games the last couple of years and key sequences in the season where Troy has been out MIKE linebacker," Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter said. "There was a stretch there last year where he did it, played really well, won some key games.

"He played probably the first five games of the year, DP went out pretty quickly in the Chiefs game in the first game of the year and Troy played really well then," Minter added.

Dye started five games at linebacker for the Chargers last season as well and has proven to be able to slot in when needed.

Having already set a career-high for defensive snaps in a season, the 29-year-old is looking forward to another opportunity to make an impact.

"I prepare like I'm going to be playing every snap," Dye said this week. "That's kind of what you have to do survive in this league. Anything can happen during the game so you ultimately have to be prepared to play at a high level if your number gets called.

Dye later added: "I'm going to go out there and prepare and try to fill the role the right way."

3. T Trey Pipkins

The offensive line has been an area to watch on a short week.

Left tackle Jamaree Salyer left Sunday's game against the Cowboys with a hamstring injury and didn't practice this week.

Pipkins, however, was back practicing in full after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.

If Salyer can't go, the Bolts have a number of options at the tackle position, with Pipkins being one of them. Pipkins has played in 11 games this season, nine starts, almost entirely at right tackle.

And the tackle position comes into focus with the Houston defensive line coming to town.

"There's a pride in their work, there's a mentality," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "It just jumps off the tape. Playing very together, running to the ball, sure tacklers. Very challenging."

The Texans have a strength specifically at the edge position, with Will Anderson, Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

Anderson leads the NFL in quarterback pressures with 87, while Hunter is fifth with 75. They have also combined for a total of 24.5 sacks, 42 quarterback hits and 30 tackles for loss.

If Pipkins returns to play, he will be a focal point on one side against the Texans front.
