3 Chargers Players That Stood Out in Preseason vs. 49ers

The Chargers second preseason action is in the books after a loss to the 49ers on Thursday night at SoFi Stadium.

Here are three players that stood out in the Bolts second preseason game:

1. LB Junior Colson

The third-year linebacker had been waiting for a big moment.

That opportunity came in the second half in the preseason game against San Francisco.

With 49ers quarterback Adrian Martinez dropping back to pass, Colson read his eyes perfectly and broke for the football after he released the ball.

He then returned the interception 16 yards into the end zone for the Chargers first touchdown of the night and was mobbed by his teammates.

"Quick game. I knew anything quick inside, that's where they had to go," Colson said postgame. "The second [the tight end] motioned away, it was going to be double slants so that's what I was reading."

The Chargers 2024 third-round pick missed all last season after suffering a shoulder injury during the preseason.

This came after battling injuries as a rookie as well, making Thursday’s big play meaningful to him after what's been a long journey back.

"It felt really good to get back out there on the field," Colson said. "It wasn't the result we wanted, so it doesn't feel as great as it should've. We just got to keep stacking.

"I'm just glad to be playing the sport I love again. I feel like I missed two years of it now," Colson added.

Colson has been out there all offseason and training camp, and has one more preseason game on deck to be able to stack on this big play.

"I've felt really good to be back out there," Colson said. "Just good to be able to play my game again and build my confidence back up, trust my shoulder, trust my body.

"That's been the biggest thing during camp, just trusting myself and going out there and making plays," Colson added.

2. CB Rodney Shelley

Rodney Shelley had flashed during Chargers Training Camp, stacking strong performances one day after another.

He added to that with an all-around performance on Thursday night.

The undrafted rookie cornerback finished the night with three total tackles and two passes defensed.

"I feel like I flashed a little bit of my traits with those, being physical and getting my hand on the ball," Shelley said after the game. "Showing some of speed and putting it on tape."

Both of Shelley's pass breakups came to prevent explosives deep down the field as he was able to get in perfect position to avoid big plays.

He also mixed in tackling on a quick screen in the third quarter, where he was the first player to get to 49ers wide receiver Jordan Watkins and bring him down for no gain.

Add on a tackle on a kickoff return as well, Shelley mixed in with just about everything.

With one more week of camp and a preseason game on the horizon, Shelley said he's just focused on building every day.

"Honestly, just going out and having fun with these guys," Shelley said. "I've created friendships with these guys in a short amount of time, enjoying the game with them and honing in on the details."

"Just stacking days and getting better every day," he added.

3. S Devin Grant

Shelley wasn't the only undrafted rookie defensive back with a big moment on Thursday night.

Rookie Devin Grant came away with a big play in the fourth quarter of his own, notching the second defensive takeaway.

On the field for a third-and 8, Martinez scrambled out of the pocket and looked down field for a big play and potentially a first down conversion.

However, Grant instinctively picked up the 49ers wide receiver trailing behind him during the scramble drill and got underneath the pass, making a leaping, full extension interception near the sideline.

Grant, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, now added the turnover to his four total tackles in the preseason so far, as well as adding in one on the kickoff return unit.

The play late in the fourth quarter gave the Chargers the ball back on their own 45-yard line as they would later score on a 28-yard touchdown by tight end Jerand Bradley.
