The Chargers on Monday hired Mike McDaniel for the Offensive Coordinator position.
Here are five things to know about McDaniel:
1. Head Coach in Miami
McDaniel is coming off a stint where he was at the helm for the Dolphins.
The 42-year-old spent the last four seasons as the head coach in Miami, being named the 11th head coach in the history of the franchise in 2022.
He accumulated a 35-33 record that included an 11-win campaign, and led them back-to-back playoff appearances, something the franchise had not experienced in over 20 years.
McDaniel became just the third head coach in Dolphins history to make back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two seasons.
2. High-powered offenses
McDaniel has been able to produce some of the most explosive offenses in the NFL during his time as an offensive playcaller.
He helped lead the Dolphins to a top 10 offense in yards per game in 2022 and 2023, as well as rank second in the NFL in points per game with just over 29 a game during the 2023 season.
The 2023 season in particular was arguably McDaniel's most productive as a playcaller as helped the Dolphins lead the league in total offense (401.3 yards per game) for the first time since 1994.
Their highlight of that season came in a game where they scored 70 points, the second-most in a regular-season game in NFL history. They also tallied 726 total yards, which were also the second-most in any game in NFL history.
Their offense under McDaniel also led the NFL in passing offense (265.5) and yards per carry (5.1) that season as five Miami offensive players made the Pro Bowl.

3. Time in SF
Prior to being hired by Miami, McDaniel spent a good amount of time on the offensive staff in San Francisco.
He was brought on in 2017 by then-new Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, as he would spend a total of five seasons with the 49ers.
The first four as the team's run game coordinator and his 2021 season as their offensive coordinator.
San Francisco finished seventh in the NFL in total offense (375.7 yards per game) during his lone season at the position in 2021 as they played in the NFC Championship game. They were also seventh in league in rushing (127.4) that season.
4. Coaching in the NFL
McDaniel has ample experience in the coaching ranks of the NFL.
He has spent time with a total of seven teams for a total of 19 seasons as a coach in the league.
Aside from his time with the Dolphins and 49ers, he spent a number of seasons in various offensive roles for the Broncos, Texans, Washington, Browns and Falcons over his career.
5. Big break in coaching
A native of Colorado, McDaniel got his first big break in coaching as a 22-year-old.
He would land a job as a coaching intern with the Denver Broncos during the 2005 season under then coach Mike Shanahan.
McDaniel would then go on to turn that into another position with the Houston Texans as an offensive assistant, a role he would hold for three seasons.
