McCaffrey5Things

The Chargers recently announced that Max McCaffrey has joined the coaching staff as the running backs coach.

Here are five things to know about McCaffrey:

1. Football family

You probably recognized McCaffrey's last name right away.

McCaffrey was born into a football family as his father, Ed, played wide receiver for the Giants, 49ers and Broncos over a 13-year career. Ed McCaffrey won two Super Bowls with the Broncos and had 55 career touchdown catches.

McCaffrey is also the eldest of four boys in his family, including current 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, a first-round pick in 2017. Christian McCaffrey is a four-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro who was the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

McCaffrey also has two other younger brothers named Dylan and Luke. Dylan McCaffrey got some snaps at quarterback for Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in 2018 and 2019.

Luke McCaffrey, meanwhile, is currently a wide receiver with the Commanders. He was a 2024 third-round pick by Washington.

A fun fact: Max McCaffrey's Chargers are set to host Christian McCaffrey's 49ers at SoFi Stadium during the 2026 NFL season.

2. Time with McDaniel

McCaffrey joins the Bolts after three seasons down in Miami with new Chargers Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel.

McCaffrey was an offensive assistant with the Dolphins for the past three seasons when McDaniel was the head coach.

The duo also overlapped in 2017 and 2018 in San Francisco when McCaffrey was a wide receiver and McDaniel served as the 49ers Run Game Coordinator.

3. Former NFL player

McCaffrey spent three seasons in the NFL from 2016 to 2018, primarily spending time on the practice squad for multiple teams.

He began his NFL career with the Raiders after he signed with them as an undrafted free agent after the 2016 NFL Draft.

All in all, McCaffrey was with the Raiders, Packers, Saints, Jaguars and 49ers.

McCaffrey recorded one catch for four yards in his NFL career and appeared in six games.

4. Coaching history

McCaffrey got his start in coaching at the college level.

He joined Northern Colorado's staff in 2020 as the wide receivers coach before adding Offensive Coordinator duties to his plate in 2021 and 2022.

McCaffrey then spent three years in Miami. He will be an NFL position coach for the first time as he works with 2025 first-round pick Omarion Hampton.

5. Duke graduate

McCaffery played college football and graduated from Duke.

He appeared in 53 games for the Blue Devils, making 38 total starts in his career.

McCaffery caught 117 total passes for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns and was twice earned Academic All-ACC honors.

He graduated in 2016 with a degree in psychology along with a certificates in markets and management.
