3 Chargers Stats You Need to Know Ahead of Week 2

From Justin Herbert to Keenan Allen, here are the Chargers best stats from a Week 1 win

The Chargers have turned their attention to Monday night's primetime matchup with the Raiders.

The AFC West rivals both sit at 1-0 after season-opening wins in Week 1.

Here are three key Chargers stats ahead of Week 2:

1. Justin Herbert remains elite

Justin Herbert has been showered with praise in the days following Friday night's win over the Chiefs.

And it's all well deserved after Herbert played one of the best games of his career in São Paulo, Brazil.

In terms of common stats, the Chargers quarterback threw for 318 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, good for a quarterback rating of 131.7. He also added 32 key rushing yards, including a 19-yard scramble late in the fourth quarter to ice the game.

But the advanced metrics also show just how good Herbert was against Kansas City.

According to Pro Football Focus, Herbert had a 62.8 percent success rate against the Chiefs, which ranked first among all NFL quarterbacks.

He also compiled an EPA per play of 0.438, which ranked third among QBs. And Herbert, who had zero turnover-worthy plays, also had an average depth of target (ADOT) of 10.3. Herbert was among six quarterbacks who had an ADOT of 10.0 or higher in Week 1.

Simply put, Herbert was magnificent in the 2025 season opener and remains among the most elite players in the NFL.

"The way No. 10 put us on his back, he's been working since that last playoff game," Derwin James, Jr. said of Herbert after Friday's win. "I know he's going to carry us this year."

2. Minter's thrives in 1st half

The Chargers hung tough late against the Chiefs by answering the bell multiple times in the second half.

Of course, a strong defensive effort in the first half helped put the Bolts in position to get an early lead.

The Chargers defense limited Kansas City to 133 net yards and a pair of field goals in the first two quarters in Week 1 while also stopping the Chiefs on all seven third-down tries.

That low-scoring effort has become commonplace under Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter as it was the sixth time since the start of last season that the Bolts have not allowed a touchdown in the opening half.

Besides Friday night, the Chargers did so five times last season against the Panthers, Saints, Browns, Bengals and at the Broncos.

"We played really good defense," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday of the overall defensive effort.

3. Third and Keenan

You love to see it.

Third and Keenan was back in full force Friday night as Herbert and Keenan Allen quickly rediscovered their strong rapport on third downs.

Allen had 68 yards and a touchdown on a team-high seven catches, and as usual, did plenty of damage on third down.

Six of Allen's seven catches either went for a first down or a touchdown, and three of those receptions moved the chains on third down.

Allen, by the way, moved closer to Antonio Gates' pair of records that he could have in sight this season.

The 33-year-old has 911 career catches with the Chargers and is 45 receptions away from surpassing Gates' franchise record of 955.

Allen also has 10,598 receiving yards with the Bolts and is 1,244 yards from breaking Gates' record of 11,841 receiving yards.

Something to keep an eye on in the weeks and months ahead.
