5 Chargers Players to Watch in Preseason Finale vs. 49ers

NikkoReed

It's a chance for a final impression.

The Chargers will play their preseason finale Saturday night on the road against the 49ers. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. (PT).

Here are five players to watch in the Chargers fourth and final preseason game:

1. CB Nikko Reed

Reed flashed early on in training camp before he missed practice time while working through something physically.

But the rookie undrafted free agent ended the summer on a high note with an interception in the final camp practice on Thursday.

Has the cornerback done enough to make the 53-man roster? That's still up in the air.

Reed surely has a chance to sway the front office and coaching staff with another eye-popping game against the 49ers.

2. OL Branson Taylor

The Chargers starting offensive line is set, and the next two reserve players are also cemented in Jamaree Salyer and Andre James.

We're putting Taylor on this list because he'll get a chance to show what he can do at tackle on Saturday night.

Taylor, the Chargers 2025 sixth-round pick, played tackle at Pittsburgh but transitioned to guard upon arriving to the Bolts. But he recently moved back to tackle in practice in an effort to help figure out another potential option at swing tackle.

If Taylor plays well in the finale, he could thrust himself into a key reserve role once the regular season arrives.

3. S RJ Mickens

The Chargers defense will be paced by a trio of veteran safeties in 2025, a group that affects how the rest of the unit plays in front of them.

But the fourth (or maybe fifth?) safety on the Chargers roster will have to contribute on special teams while staying ready to help on defense.

Where does Mickens land in that group?

The recent sixth-round draft pick has flashed in both practices and games, even if he needs a little fine tuning in finishing plays for takeaways.

It will be interesting to see what the Chargers do in the secondary with Tony Jefferson and Mickens when the 53-man roster deadline arrives.

4. RB Raheim Sanders

With Najee Harris still on the Non-Football Injury List, Omarion Hampton has stepped into the role of RB1 for the Chargers.

Hassan Haskins then drew praise from Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh on Thursday for both his rushing ability and special teams skills.

But what about the third running back on the roster?

Jaret Patterson missed the past two weeks of practice while Kimani Vidal didn't practice for the final three days of camp.

That leaves Sanders and Nyheim Miller-Hines as the only healthy running backs on the roster.

Simply put: if Patterson and Vidal continue to work through something physically, Sanders could find himself on the 53-man roster with an impressive showing in Santa Clara.

5. QB Trey Lance

Lance will start Saturday but we won't see much of him as Harbaugh noted he'll only play a series or two.

But it will be a chance for Lance to put an exclamation point on what has been a superb summer for him.

The former No. 3 overall pick has hit big pass plays and moved the chains with his legs, all while not turning the ball over and displaying a calming presence in the pocket.

Will the Chargers keep two or three quarterbacks next week? We'll see what the front office decides to do.

Either way, there's no doubt Lance has turned heads since joining the Chargers.
