How Trey Lance is Determined to Build on Hall of Fame Game Performance

Chargers quarterback Trey Lance knew he would have a lot of opportunity in Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game — and the quarterback delivered an impressive overall performance.

But if you ask him what stuck out to him the most about his play, his mind goes to the things he feels he needs to improve.

Still, it's more than enough to build on.

"Zero for four on red-zone fades doesn't help," Lance said Saturday with a smile. "I think that's the thing that stands out.

"But I'm not going to be too upset about it," Lance added. "Turn the page and work on them and get better. I feel like this is a good starting point and continue to grow from there."

Lance completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards and two scores in the preseason opener against the Lions and was in control all night.

He finished with a quarterback rating 114.6 and guided the Bolts to points in five of his nine offensive drives he was under center.

Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman said Saturday that the biggest thing that stood out from the 25-year old's performance was the fact he did it all while not turning the ball over.

It's a good start for a quarterback who has seen limited action so far in his NFL career.

"Winning football, [he] played winning football," Roman said. "Really can't point to anything that was detrimental to the team. He did a lot of really good things that were good for the team. It's a good start for him, he hadn't had a ton of playing experience throughout his career, so that was a really good opportunity for him to get some good playing experience."

"Getting ready for the game, totally calm, very poised, just excited to be able to go out there and execute," Roman later added. "He's a guy that's really diligent with his preparation and whatnot. He definitely afforded himself well."

And the Bolts have been nothing but the best for him so far, Lance said.

The quarterback has enjoyed his time in the quarterback room with all the players at his position.

But he added that it has been particularly impactful for him to learn from Justin Herbert, a player who he has enjoyed being next to in his short time with the Bolts.

"It's a great place to be," Lance said. "I talked about it a little bit after the game, but guys are joyful, guys love it, coaching staff, players, assistants, everything. It's just a fun place to play.

"It's been fun to learn from Justin, I think we the game very similarly, play the game very similarly," he added. "It's been great to be able to spend time around him and how he is as a person on and off the field."

He's also enjoyed learning from Roman, quarterback coach Shane Day and passing game coordinator Marcus Brady, who he says have all been instrumental during his time in Los Angeles.

And who can forget Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, who has also been a highlight of his time with the team and had nothing but high praise for.

"Having Coach Harbaugh, every day you don't know what you're going to get and in the best way possible," Lance said. "High energy, just a fun guy to be around, fun guy to sit around and talk ball with or talk about life with.

"I've learned a ton from him," Lance continued. "I figure something new about him every day, how he is and how he handles different situations. I've loved it, I've loved being able to just be around him. I love when he's in the quarterback room, when he's with us on the field.

"He's always got something and he's always got a story to come with it so it really hits home when he tells something," Lance added.

As far as the backup quarterback job, Roman said it's still up in the air.

With three preseason games left, the next coming on August 10 against the Saints, there will be a lot to be decided — and plenty of time to do so.

"It's wide open," Roman said. "It's merely August 2. It's wide open. Competition is wide open. I'm sure we'll have a different plan this game, not sure what that's going to be yet as far as who's playing, how much and all that, but yeah wide open."

He later added: "Couldn't be happier with that room."

It will be a competition that will play out as the Chargers prepare for three more preseason games, but Lance says he's excited to stay in the moment and grow each day rather than look too ahead.

"When you get to play a game it's a little more exciting than practice, but I feel like I don't really ride the wave as much anymore as I used to," Lance said. "Just try to take it one day at time. Like I said, I feel like that's a good starting point for the preseason."

Lance later added: "Excited to grow from there. If that's our starting place, I feel like we'll be in a good spot by game four."
