5 Chargers Players Who Stood Out in the Hall of Fame Game

Top5PlayersHOF

The Chargers were back on the gridiron in Canton, Ohio, as they rolled to a 34-7 win over Detroit in the 2025 Hall of Fame Game.

Here are five players who stood out against the Lions:

WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith

The rookie fifth-round pick said earlier in the week he was ready to showcase his talents to a national audience.

And he did just that.

Lambert-Smith, as he's done throughout his first training camp, shined in his preseason debut hauling in two passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Not only that, but the rookie showed exactly what he's capable of on both receptions.

His first came on the second offensive drive of the game with the unit facing a third-and 4 on their own 34.

With Trey Lance looking down the field, Lambert-Smith used a double move to create separation down the right sideline and haul in the 28-yard pass.

"I got pressed and just converted a route to a fade," Lambert-Smith said after the game. "Just showed the trust the receivers gain from the QBs, willing to take those one-on-one shots when the opportunities presents itself.

"I'm happy I could just make the play, which is going to ultimately allow us to get more opportunities," Lambert-Smith added. "A great throw by Trey."

The fifth-rounder later showed off his separation skills once again near the goal line in the last couple of minutes of the first half.

Lambert-Smith used a quick move to free himself on a slant on another third down, showing his burst on his way to the end zone for his first touchdown.

"I feel like I'm pretty effective with the ball in my hands, pretty quick," Lambert-Smith said. "Trey gave me a great pass I could just run through and don't got to stop my feet. He made it easy for me, I just handled the rest."

It was the first step for the rookie, but he showed much of the same explosiveness he has in camp so far.

"Just continuing to get better," Lambert-Smith said. "There's things I felt I could've did better in the game. Just continuing to hone in on those little details and prepare for next game."

CB Nikko Reed

The rookie undrafted free agent had been turning heads at Chargers Training Camp so far.

"I would say [consistency] is probably the most impressive," Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter said about Reed last Monday after practice. "The old adage is, 'Make a play a day and people will start to know who you are.'"

How about a couple of more plays?

Reed picked up where he left off and had arguably the best performance out of a defensive effort that had a number of great ones, finishing with an interception and two passes defensed.

He flashed the same big play ability he has during a camp that has seen him be disruptive with the ball in the air — none more apparent than his first splash play of the night.

With the Lions facing a third-and 9 in the first quarter, Reed read the eyes of Detroit quarterback Kyle Allen perfectly, jumping in front of the pass for the interception.

"It felt great. First NFL game as a rookie, third down, money down," Reed said postgame. "I felt the route, knew it and just went. Seen the ball, grabbed it and went."

He later added: "As soon as I seen him break out, jumped under it and I saw the ball."

He was able to return it 60 yards the other way, which set up Kimani Vidal's 2-yard touchdown run.

It's not like it was just on defense either. Reed contributed on special teams and notched two tackles on kickoff returns.

Reed will continue to be a name to watch moving forward and will have ample opportunities to do it again with three preseason games left on the docket.

"To Nikko's credit, there's a lot of guys who might not be working through something, he's been working through stuff and still playing good," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said postgame. "That bodes well. You start thinking about him as a real football player.

He later added: "Derwin said it right, Derwin said he's a baller. Really happy for his success tonight."

QB Trey Lance

With Justin Herbert not suiting up and Taylor Heinicke serving as the emergency quarterback, Lance came into the game knowing he would have ample opportunities.

He made sure to make the most of them, too.

"I was excited to be able to play and I was excited we got this fourth preseason game," Lance said postgame. "If they told me I could play four full games then I'd be fired up about it."

Lance was on point and calm throughout the night, guiding the Bolts to points in five of his nine offensive drives he was under center.

The 25-year-old finished the night completing 13 of his 20 attempts (65 percent) for 120 yards, two touchdowns and a 114.6 quarterback rating.

"Usually you can predict. If somebody is playing good in practice, they play good in the games pretty much at all positions," Harbaugh said about Lance after the game. "Quarterback is no different, until you see them in the game in that 11-on-11. I thought he had the same kind of composure and poise and in control.

"There's a presence that I've been seeing all camp, he's had a heck of a camp, then he went out in the game and did that," Harbaugh added. "Just the feeling of he needs game reps and he's going to get them. It was a great start for him."

His first touchdown came following the first turnover on the opening kickoff when the Chargers went for it on fourth down.

Rolling to his right, Lance put some nice touch over the outstretched arm of a Lions defender and dropped it off perfectly for Will Dissly in the end zone.

It was one of his many impressive throws of the game as the quarterback put together quite the performance in his first action in the powder blue.

Lance is looking forward to more game opportunities to build on his performance, something that has been limited so far in his young career.

"I'm excited to watch the tape and learn a lot from it," Lance said after the game. "Always some good and some bad, but just great to be out there. I feel good about it overall. No turnovers so obviously that's a win."

He later added: "I want to get better every time I touch the field whether that's practice, walkthrough or a game."

RB Kimani Vidal

Thursday marked the first chance for the running backs to really showcase their abilities in full speed after not getting the chance to during camp — and Vidal led the way for the group.

The Chargers second-year running back finished as the team's leading rusher with nine carries for 37 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the night.

"Kimani Vidal, great to see him get the two touchdowns," Harbaugh said.

The Bolts rotated running backs for most of the night, but Vidal made the most of goal line carries with both of his scores coming from two yards out.

He also displayed his burst and explosive play ability, taking a carry on a third-down play for 16 yards on a drive that eventually led to points.

It was a good night overall for the backs as the Chargers finished the night with 121 rushing yards as a team.

OLB Caleb Murphy

We'll end it with the player who helped set the tone from the first play of the game.

Murphy was on it from the opening kickoff of the game and notched the tackle that helped force the fumble recovered by Kendall Williamson after beating his blocker and a clean one-on-one opportunity with the returner.

It was a sign of things to come for Murphy, who was just as disruptive the rest of the game on the defensive side as well.

The 25-year-old outside linebacker finished the night with two tackles, as well as one for loss, but had a number of pressures and flashed rushing the passer.

Arguably his best rep of the night came early in the fourth quarter with the Lions facing a third down.

Murphy executed his rush to perfection, ripping through the right tackle for the pressure, forcing Hendon Hooker to step up into a sack by TeRah Edwards.

Murphy has had a good camp so far and made the most of his first live action in a game as he makes his case in a room with a lot of competition.
