Why Junior Colson is Looking Forward to Battle for Starting Role in Chargers Defense

There was plenty for Junior Colson to learn from after his rookie season.

And it left him motivated heading into his first full offseason in 2025.

"A lot of room to improve," Colson said on Monday. "Certain things I didn't like."

He later added: "A lot of lessons having injuries [in] Year 1."

Colson played in just 11 games, starting one in his first year, but was never able to get a consistent runway as he was limited by injuries starting in the summer and into the season.

Following the up-and-down debut campaign, the linebacker entered this year with a clear goal in mind for his second year.

"Me and Coach [Harbaugh] talked about it, I rather have it Year 1 than Year 5 or 6. Getting those injuries behind me, getting healthy," Colson said. "It's the NFL, you don't really get all that time so you have to stay on top of your body, you have to stay on top of your health.

"The best ability is availability, so that was one of the biggest things we harped on and focused on in Year 1," Colson added.

He attacked it with full force, making it a priority, among other things, and really catching the eye of the coaching staff while doing it.

It wasn't like he was doing things that were much different — it was just getting back to being healthy and doing what has worked.

"I kind of just went back to what I knew, how I work and how I grinded before injuries and things pushed me back," Colson said. There's no flashy things or adding different things like, 'I need to do this differently.'

"Just go back to the fundamentals, go back to Coach [Ben Herbert] and guys that always got me right and making sure I get right and ready to go," Colson added.

It's something Colson believes will help in a big way when it comes to his reps in live action.

"I wouldn't say it was the speed of the game, it was me getting my body right to be able to play at this level," Colson said. "We played very high level football in college and just having that translate and getting the reps more out here and with the guys.

"Being able to have a camp and reps under you does wonders to the body and having the older vets show me the way," Colson added.

The young linebacker was praised back in the spring by his position coach NaVorro Bowman and Denzel Perryman for his mindset and the way he attacked preparation about getting his body right.

And it has certainly helped Colson a lot having those experienced, veteran voices in the room.

Bowman has been a key figure for the linebackers, especially with the younger players, as his unique perspective has been valuable for the group.

It holds true with Colson, who says the coach has helped with more than just what he's looking to improve on in live action.

"Huge. He sees it in the eyes of a player, so he knows what we need, what the best thing is for us in those moments," Colson said. "'Here's what I did, it might not work for you but maybe take some ideas off that cause we each got different bodies.'

"He's been a great tool great thing, especially in the offseason," Colson added. "He showed me a couple things I should add to my regiment, just staying healthy and staying on top of everything, staying in shape, being able to run around. I think he's been one of those staples."

The veteran Perryman has also been a major source for Colson, who has helped as one of the most experienced members of the team.

Perryman has liked what he's seen from Colson and has big expectations for the 22-year-old in 2025.

"A breakout year," Perryman said. "Last year probably didn't go as well as he wanted to with injuries and things like that. I understand that because I've been through there.

"Just the way he's gone about his business in the meeting room and on the field, I expect a breakout season from him," Perryman added. "There's going to be a lot of competition going on."

The linebacker competition will be something to watch, as Colson will be in the thick of it heading into the regular season.

Colson will have plenty of chances to make his mark in the room as the pads come on Tuesday and preseason games rapidly approach — and he's looking forward to it.

"I think it's heating up," Colson said about the linebacker competition. "We have some really good guys.

"When the pads come on, that's when bullets are flying," Colson added. "Just having fun out there, competition heating up day after day in the first week of camp, so we're going to keep stacking it."
