Why Omarion Hampton & Kimani Vidal Are Excited to Team Up Down the Stretch

The Chargers run game has been a big difference maker in the wins and losses this season.

The team is 6-2 in 2025 when rushing over 100 yards, including the most recent performance in Week 13 against the Raiders that featured 192 yards on the ground, second-most this year.

"There was definitely a point of emphasis on it," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "I would say all things paid dividends."

And with five games left in the season, the run game comes into focus as the group is excited about what it could be.

Chargers first-round pick Omarion Hampton was once again at practice this week, participating in a limited fashion Thursday after being limited all of last week and getting his 21-day window opened.

It remains to be seen if Hampton returns this week, but the rookie said he feels "great" after his first week of practice since Week 5, adding how beneficial these practices have been as he ramps up.

Even though he has been around, getting back into game feel has been crucial.

"I've been around the whole time, so I've been in meetings and everything," Hampton said on Thursday. "The mental part really hasn't stopped for me, it's just being back in the groove of it is really the main thing."

Hampton had been one of the Chargers most productive offensive players before his injury, tallying 86 total touches for 450 yards and two touchdowns, really finding his footing through each game.

And when it comes to the backfield he's returning to, the Bolts can't help but be fired up about the 1-2 punch they can bring on the ground.

Kimani Vidal continues to shine, adding on a career-high performance against the Raiders, including a career-long touchdown run of 59 yards.

"The proof is in the pudding with the way he plays. It's been great," Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He's played like a No. 1 back."

Vidal has held it down in the absence of Hampton since taking over in Week 6.

His 532 rushing yards rank 12th among running backs, as he has also ran for three touchdowns and tacked on 63 receiving yards.

"I would say it's more motivating than anything knowing that I can do it," Vidal said this week. "I just want to keep doing it.

"It feels good to contribute to the team," Vidal added.

Vidal's physicality has really shined as well, as he has forced 25 missed tackles according to Pro Football Focus, eighth-most among his position.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Vidal forced 12 missed tackles against the Raiders, the most by a Chargers player since the 2020 season, and gained 89 yards off missed tackles, the eighth-most by any player in a game this season.

The run game has been efficient with Vidal, but the impact explosive runs have on the Chargers offense has emerged as an emphasis to build on in the coming weeks.

Vidal has broken off 13 runs of over 10 yards this season, while Hampton had seven in the five games he played.

"We want to build on that," Vidal said. "Specifically the explosive runs, it changes the game. It changes the passing game, it's a real threat.

"Obviously in the league, you're never angry about five-yard runs, eight-yard runs, but it's good to know we are explosive running the ball," Vidal added.

The two running backs were active together just twice this season, but now are in a different position whenever Hampton is activated off of Injured Reserve.

With what Vidal continues to do on the ground and what Hampton showed earlier this year, the two are fired up to show what they can do as a duo in this playoff push.

"He's a playmaker, so it's another playmaker on the field," Vidal said. "It would be great to have him back."

Hampton added: "It's amazing to see him go out there and produce the way he did. Just him coming back with me, it's definitely going to be special. Me and him are going to be special."
