Here are five things to know about Roney:

1. Pair of years in L.A.

Roney just finished up his second year in the NFL.

Coming on staff after Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh was hired, he has held a couple of roles in his two seasons with the team.

Roney initially joined as a defensive assistant, working a lot with outside linebackers, before being given the title of outside linebackers coach prior to the 2025 season.

2. Working on the edge

The coach's first season coaching the outside linebackers saw a major impact for the defensive side of the ball for the Chargers.

Roney's unit amassed 29.5 total sacks in 2025, fourth-most in the NFL, and were sixth in the NFL with 129 quarterback hurries during the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus.

They also ranked top 10 in forced fumbles (five) and tackles for loss and no gain (24).

He oversaw a breakout season by third-year outside linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu, who notched 13.0 sacks and a Pro Bowl nomination, as well as helped onboard Odafe Oweh, who racked up 7.5 sacks after joining the team midway through the regular season.

3. CFP National Champion

Prior to Roney joining the Bolts, he was a National Champion.

He spent three seasons with Harbaugh at Michigan as a graduate assistant from 2021 to 2023, helping the defensive coaching staff in game planning, analysis and day-to-day operations.

Roney had a hand in the stellar Wolverines defense during the championship year, as they allowed just 17 touchdowns on the year and allowed just 247.0 total net yards and 10.4 points per game.

4. Former student-athlete

Before Roney coached the edge rushers, he was one in college.

He was First-Team All-State in the state of Michigan and spent the 2014 season at the United States Naval Academy before transferring to Ferris State University for his final three years (2015-17) of college.

Roney helped lead the Bulldogs to three consecutive NCAA Division II Playoff appearances, including a run to the semifinals as a junior in 2016, and was a three-year starter.

5. Working his way up

Roney has held a couple of positions on his way up the coaching ranks.

Before joining Michigan he was defensive analyst for another Big Ten team at the University of Illinois in 2020 after spending a year as a defensive graduate assistant at Western Kentucky University.

He got his coaching start at his alma mater, joining Ferris State's coaching staff for the 2018 season as a defensive line assistant/recruiting coordinator after finishing up his collegiate career.

The Chargers on Monday confirmed they have interviewed Dylan Roney for their Defensive Coordinator position.
