5 Things to Know About the Chargers Ahead of Week 5

5 Things W5

Consider this your one-stop shop on Mondays for all things Chargers.

Here are five things to know about the Bolts ahead of Week 5:

1. What happened in Week 4?

The undermanned Chargers put forth a valiant effort but came up just short in a 17-10 loss to the Chiefs.

The Bolts were playing without four first-round picks — Rashawn Slater, Joe Alt, Joey Bosa and Derwin James, Jr. — and were also missing key role players such as Ja'Sir Taylor and Deane Leonard.

Justin Herbert played despite a high ankle sprain as the Bolts used a makeshift offensive line in front of him.

The Chargers got out to an early 10-0 lead behind a pair of defensive takeaways but the offense struggled to get going the rest of the way.

The defense's biggest blip was allowing an explosive 54-yard touchdown, but the unit played well overall.

2. What is the Chargers record?

The Chargers currently sit at 2-2 on the season after four games.

The Bolts won their first two games against the Raiders and Panthers before falling to the Steelers and the Chiefs.

The Chargers currently sit in second place in the AFC West behind the Chiefs (4-0) and tied with the Raiders and Broncos, both of whom are 2-2.

The Bolts, one of six AFC teams with a 2-2 record, are currently eighth in the AFC playoff picture.

3. Who stood out in Week 4?

Ladd McConkey was the Chargers top-graded player via Pro Football Focus for the second straight week.

The rookie wide receiver posted an overall grade of 81.9 after he tallied five receptions for 67 yards.

McConkey got the Bolts off to a strong start with a 7-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

Defensively, Khalil Mack (85.3) and Tuli Tuipulotu (85.1) had the best PFF grades of the day.

Mack was a force in the run game while Tuipulotu forced a fumble and deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage.

4. How's the health of the squad?

The Chargers injury report was lengthy last week as multiple players are dealing with various ailments.

Herbert played through his high ankle sprain and wore a protective brace on it. Slater (pectoral) and Alt (knee) were out while Bosa didn't practice all week with a hip issue.

Rookie Junior Colson missed his second straight game with a hamstring injury.

The Bolts don't have to release an injury report during the bye so we'll have a better read on the health of the team next week.

5. What does Week 5 look like for the Bolts?

The Bolts don't play this week as they have an early bye week.

The hope is that the team can get healthy and regroup with 13 straight games looming on the horizon.

After their bye week, the Chargers get set for another AFC West showdown when they travel to face the Broncos in Week 6.
