5ThingsButchBarry

The Chargers announced Friday that Butch Barry has joined the coaching staff as the offensive line coach.

Here are five things to know about Barry:

1. Familiarity with McDaniel

The veteran offensive line coach joins the Bolts after three seasons down in Miami with new Chargers Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel.

Barry served in the same role in McDaniel's offense with the Dolphins from 2023 to 2025 and was a big part in helping Miami put together a dynamic offense.

The coach was a part of the Dolphins staff in 2023 that helped lead the league in total offense (401.3 net yards per game) and passing offense (265.5 net passing yards per game) while ranking No. 2 in scoring offense (29.2).

He also spent some time with McDaniel prior to their time in Miami, as Barry was the 49ers assistant offensive line coach while McDaniel was San Francisco's offensive coordinator for the 2021 season.

2. Big-time offensive numbers

The Dolphins offensive line was a key piece that helped the unit put up the numbers that they did.

When you look at just last season, the Dolphins allowed the second-fewest pressures in the NFL (155) and were tied for seventh in NFL with an 84.8 pass-blocking efficiency. They were also second in pressure rate allowed and third in rushing yards per attempt.

Looking big picture over Barry's three seasons in Miami, the Dolphins allowed just 461 total pressures, according to Pro Football Focus, the lowest number in the league.

Not to mention, they also complied the second-best pass blocking efficiency in the NFL over that same time period, amassing an 86.6.

The line helped the Dolphins put together over 6,400 rushing yards over the past three seasons and rank fifth in the NFL averaging 4.6 yards per carry.

Barry was also with McDaniel in 2021 as the 49ers assistant offensive line coach.

3. A decade in the NFL

Barry comes to the Bolts with 10 seasons of NFL experience under his belt.

Aside from his time with the Dolphins and 49ers alongside McDaniel, he has also had stops with three other teams.

He first broke into the NFL with the Buccaneers as their assistant offensive line coach in 2015, a role he would hold for four total seasons.

His next NFL opportunity would then come in 2020 as a senior analyst for the Packers. And after his year in San Francisco, he would become the Broncos offensive line coach in 2022.

4. College experience

The new Chargers assistant's total coaching career extends over two decades when going back to his start in college.

Following his college playing career, Barry served as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan (his alma mater) for two seasons to start his coaching career from 2002-03.

He would then make two stops at Southwest Minnesota State University and later Michigan Tech University as their offensive line coach before assuming offensive coordinator with the latter in 2007 and 2008.

Barry found himself back at Central Michigan for five seasons at Central Michigan as the school's offensive line coach in 2014 after coaching the tight ends from 2010-13. He last coached in college as Miami's offensive line coach in 2019.

5. In the trenches

Barry was in the offensive trenches himself as a student-athlete.

An alumnus of Central Michigan, Barry played on the offensive line throughout his time at the university and earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors as a senior.
