The Chargers announced Friday that Adam Gase has joined the coaching staff as a passing game specialist.
Here are five things to know about Gase:
1. A return to the NFL
Gase is making a return to the National Football League.
The 47-year-old last coached in the NFL during the 2020 season when he was the Jets Head Coach.
Gase, who now joins the Bolts offensive staff under Mike McDaniel, will now focus on the passing game to help McDaniel and Justin Herbert in 2026.
2. Former NFL Head Coach
Gase brings NFL head coaching experience to Jim Harbaugh's coaching staff.
Gase served as the Dolphins Head Coach from 2016-2018, going 23-25 with a playoff appearance in that time in Miami.
Ironically enough, the Chargers now have two former Miami head coaches on staff with Gase and McDaniel.
Gase was let go by the Dolphins after the 2018 season but was immediately hired as the Jets Head Coach.
Gase went 9-23 in New York and was let go after the 2020 season.
3. OC experience
Gase previously spent three NFL seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator.
Gase was the Broncos Offensive Coordinator in 2013 and 2014 when Denver put up prolific numbers with Peyton Manning at quarterback.
Denver's 2013 offense ranked first in points (37.9), yards (457.3), passing yards (340.3) and first downs (27.2) per game and also led the league in red-zone offense (76.12 percent).
The Broncos were also a high-octane offense in 2014 as Denver ranked in the top five of most key statistical categories.
Overall, the Broncos ranked first in offensive EPA per play (0.165) and second in success rate (47.0) in Gase's two seasons as Denver's OC.
Gase was also the Bears Offensive Coordinator for the 2015 season.
4. Other NFL stops
Gase broke into the NFL in 2005 when he was an offensive assistant with the Detroit Lions.
Gase also held that role in 2006 before being promoted to Lions quarterbacks coach in 2007.
Gase then spent the 2008 season as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers before going to Denver.
He was the Broncos wide receivers coach in 2009-10 before taking over as Denver's quarterbacks coach in 2011 and 2012.
5. Roots with Nick Saban
Gase has ties to perhaps the greatest college football coach of all time.
Gase, a Michigan State grad, was a student assistant to the Spartans coaching staff when Saban was the head coach in East Lansing.
Gase then got his official start in the college ranks in 2000 when Saban took over at LSU. Gase was a graduate assistant for the 2000 season.
Gase then spent the 2001-02 seasons as a defensive assistant under Saban at LSU.
