It was a competitive afternoon among different branches of the military at The Bolt this past weekend.
The 2025 Battle of the Bases Flag Football Tournament, presented by American Airlines, brought together 11 teams of active-duty service members from across Southern California to El Segundo as they battled for the crown for a second consecutive year.
The Chargers welcomed active military personnel from the Marines, Army, Army National Guard, Coast Guard, Air Force and Space Force to The Bolt for a day of friendly competition.
"We really wanted to bring our military bases together because they fight day-in and day-out for our freedom," said Chargers Impact Fund Senior Manager Taylor Chavez. "We wanted to give them an opportunity to come together, create camaraderie between their teams and compete.
"Ultimately, just have a fun day together," Chavez added.
And after a successful debut last year, they were able to expand the field in 2025.
Last year's tournament saw four teams compete for the championship, but they were able to expand it to 11 flag football squads this year.
"Being able to invite them to The Bolt allowed us to expand the battle of the bases tournament as a whole, from four teams to 11 teams this year," Chavez said. "It allowed for more field space. The more opportunity for teams to join this year."
The 2025 Battle of the Bases Flag Football Tournament presented by American Airlines brought together 11 teams of active-duty service members from across Southern California. The Marines, Army, Army National Guard, Coast Guard, Air Force and Space Force teams came together at The Bolt for an exciting day of friendly competition on the Chargers practice field. Reigning champions – Marines from Camp Pendleton – successfully defended their title and claimed the Battle of the Bases Championship Belt!

It was a highly competitive day that saw the Marines from Camp Pendleton successfully defend their title and claim the Battle of the Bases Championship after defeating Edwards Air Force Base in the final game.
But most importantly, it gave everyone the opportunity to decompress and engage in some fun back and forth with fellow service members.
"It means everything to come out here, get some cardio, hanging out with a bunch of friends and colleagues and seeing other branches," Kenneth Kim, representing Los Angeles Air Force Base said. "It's a good thing."
He later added: "We got a lot of stuff going on, it's relaxing to come out here and play pitch and catch."
The sentiment meant a lot to all involved as well.
"Kind of to see who's the best between all the military bases on the football field," Cameron McWright, representing Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, said. "But also just a significant event to honor those who served the country and give us something to release our stress and come together as one. It's not something we get to do often."
The event also gave everyone the unique experience of playing on NFL practice field in season.
It was the first year the tournament was held at The Bolt, and those participating in it were left in awe of the opportunity they had that day.
"This being a new facility, it's surreal. The first time we get to do this ... it means a lot that y'all are allowing us to do this," McWright said. "It's in season, messing up the field and I know it's hard to keep the maintenance of the field. But we're very appreciative of it and we thank y'all so much."
Eugene Irvin, representing Los Angeles Air Force Base added: "It's a blessing, I never would've imagined being here. I'm from Savannah, Georgia, we don't have a football team obviously. Coming here, being here on this nice field, nice environment, is beautiful."
It was even more true for those who were Chargers fans and relished the chance to play on the same field the team practiced on.
"I've been a Chargers fan since 2007," Kim said. "I watch every single game, go to every single game, it's awesome.
"Getting to experience the field that everyone else plays on is an honor," he added.
It was a day that while filled with competition, also was a unique experience that brought everyone together.
"To bring everyone together, that's kind of what we live for," McWright said. "Everyone, you lift each other up and everyone can be successful.
"It's not just one person or one team, we're all service members, we're all here together," he added.
