Trey Lance is back as the Bolts backup quarterback.
The Chargers on Saturday announced they have agreed to terms with Lance, a move that ensures continuity and a quality option behind Justin Herbert in the position room.
Lance, the former No. 3 overall pick, spent two seasons with the 49ers and another two with the Cowboys before joining the Chargers last offseason.
He proved to be a valuable addition as he stepped in multiple times for Herbert during the 2025 season, including earning a start in the regular-season finale.
Lance's most important moment came in Week 13 when Herbert suffered a fractured left hand against the Raiders and had to miss a chunk of the game.
Lance stepped in and played eight snaps, completing one pass and keeping the Bolts offense moving in an eventual win over their AFC West rivals.
Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh came away impressed with Lance's poise after he was unexpectedly thrust into action.
"Just that presence that he has while he's out there, calm cool, collected," Harbaugh said. "Put in that position he was calm, cool and collected. Goes about his responsibilities, that's the quarterback's, that's his job.
"Be the leader on the field and leader in terms of executing the run play or the pass play with efficiency, securing the ball and added responsibility of making sure that we win," Harbaugh added.
Quarterbacks coach Shane Day added: "He's learned the system, knows it inside and out, is prepared every week if we call on him. I'm excited with his development."
Lance later earned a Week 18 start when Harbaugh chose to rest starters ahead of the playoffs. He threw for 136 yards and ran for 69 more in a solid performance.
"I felt really good, felt good about the guys I was going out there with," Lance said. "Those guys played super hard up front. Tight ends, running backs ... super thankful for those guys.
"I know they had my back all week and were excited and confident going in," Lance added. "I just didn't make enough plays and didn't keep us on the field long enough."
As the 2026 offseason rolls on, Herbert is obviously the unquestioned starter and the face of the Chargers franchise.
But it's never a bad idea to have solid quarterback depth, especially with a player like Lance who has dual-threat ability and is well-respected in the Chargers locker room.
