The veteran offensive lineman has position flexibility and could provide depth up front

The Chargers on Tuesday announced they have agreed to terms with Trevor Penning on a contract extension in free agency, a move that adds veteran depth to the Bolts offensive line room.

With Mekhi Becton released last week and numerous other players set to be free agents up front, the Bolts needed some insurance in the offensive trenches.

Penning will provide that, as he started at both tackle and guard for the Chargers in 2025.

The Bolts acquired Penning at the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline, bringing in the former first-round pick in exchange for 2027 sixth-round draft pick.

Penning is 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds but has athletic traits, making him a strong fit in Mike McDaniel's new system in Southern California.

At best, perhaps Penning competes for a starting guard spot and gives the Bolts surplus value on this short-term contract.

At worst, Penning is a reliable and capable depth piece who can help fill out the rest of the offensive line room.

The Chargers are currently set with Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt at tackle, with newcomer Tyler Biadasz ready to go at center.

But with seven offensive linemen from 2025 slated to be free agents, plus the release of Becton, Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz knew he needed to start adding to that room.

Penning's return is a low-risk, high-reward situation for the Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers agreed to terms on a contract extension with offensive lineman Trevor Penning. Offensive Lineman Trevor Penning appeared in 7 games in the 2026 season.
