Quick Observations from the 31-24 Loss to the Dolphins

The San Diego Chargers take a 4-6 record into the bye week after falling to the Miami Dolphins, 31-24.

Stat of the Game:

With 301 touchdowns, Philip Rivers passed John Elway for eighth all-time career passing TDs. 

Play of the Game:

Down four in the fourth quarter on second down, Philip Rivers dropped back and tossed a pass in the direction of Tyrell Williams.  Williams juked a defender, caught the pass, and cut left to take the ball 51 yards into the end zone to put the Bolts up three.

Turning Point:

After Miami came back to tie the game, the Bolts attempted a game-winning drive.  However, on 1st-and-10 from the Miami 42, Kiko Alonso ran in front of Tyrell Williams and picked off the ball.  Alonso ran it back 60 yards for a touchdown to put the Dolphins up seven with just over a minute left. 

It Was Over When:

After getting the ball back with roughly 60 seconds in the game, Melvin Gordon gained 12 on first down off a pass; however, on the following play, Rivers was picked off by Tony Lippett, who sealed the victory for the Dolphins.

Odds and Ends

The Chargers outgained the Dolphins in total yardage 379-337 yards.  The Bolts held a 309-231 advantage through the air, however the Dolphins had the edge on the ground 106-70 yards.

Korey Toomer led all Chargers defenders with 11 total tackles.  Melvin Ingram had one sack and three tackles for loss which contributed to the team's eight total TFLs on the day.

Tyrell Williams led the receiver corps in targets (11) and yards (125) while he, Melvin Gordon and Dontrelle Inman each had five receptions.

Korey Toomer served as an honorary captain.,

Inactives for the Chargers included WR Travis Benjamin, S Jahleel Addae, ILB Denzel Perryman, ILB Jatavis Brown, C Max Tuerk, WR Geremy Davis and WR Jeremy Butler.
