Observations from Day Two of Training Camp

Key plays, notes, photos and more from Sunday's action.

Top Plays:

Travis Benjamin hauled in a deep 50-yard pass from Zach Mettenberger off play-action.

Jahleel Addae knocked down a pass at the line of scrimmage coming on a safety blitz.

Antonio Gates showed his trademark concentration, keeping his eye on the ball to make a juggling catch over the middle.

Adrian Phillips made a lunging pass breakup, one of three memorable plays he had on the day.

Branden Oliver burst up the gut for a big gain during run install.

Darius Philon brought the heat to force Philip Rivers to throw the ball away.

Melvin Ingram, Jerry Attaochu, Ryan Carrethers and Tourek Williams each got to the QB during practice for what would have been sacks.

Kyle Emanuel penetrated the line of scrimmage for what would have been a tackle for loss.

Rookie Watch:

Donavon Clark had an impressive showing during one-on-one drills against the defensive line.

Mike Bercovici threaded the needle to Torrence Allen, who made a fingertip grab for the completion.

Hunter Henry showed off his soft hands to snare a laser from Rivers to move the chains.

Who Impressed:

Ricky Henne's Take:Day two felt a bit like an appetizer knowing that the pads finally come on tomorrow.  Still, there were a number of noteworthy plays.  Most fans will likely remember today's practice as the day they saw their first glimpse of Travis Benjamin's game-changing ability as Zach Mettenberger hit the speedy wideout for a deep 50-yard bomb off play-action.  On the other side of the ball, Adrian Phillips had another strong day, breaking up two passes while nearly picking off a third.

Hayley Elwood's Take: For the second straight day, Adrian Phillips continued to impress.  In 11-on-11s, he made a leaping pass breakup and nearly intercepted a pass a couple plays later.  Knowing he should have made the play, the safety immediately dropped to the ground for pushups.  In addition, wide receiver Torrence Allen made a nifty grab over a defender from a pass from rookie quarterback Mike Bercovici.

Odds and Ends:

Stevie Johnson was helped off the field after injuring his knee and is getting further tests.

Bruce Gaston and Carrington Byndom were both on the field after inking contracts earlier in the day.

Over 1,700 fans came out to watch today's sessions.  The next open practice is tomorrow morning, with gates opening around 8:20am. Tomorrow marks the first padded practice of the year.
