What Went Into Khalil Mack's Decision to Return to the Chargers

Khalil Mack was unsure about the future of his career when last season came to a close.

After another productive season in Year 11, the future Hall of Famer took some time to think and talk it through with his family.

And the answer to his question on whether to continue playing or not led him back to the feeling and goal he's been chasing since he entered the league in 2014 — raising the Lombardi Trophy.

"I couldn't give up on that dream and that goal on myself and this franchise," Mack said.

Mack spoke to reporters on Wednesday for the first time since his return to the Chargers ahead of free agency, as the veteran has continued to be in the building since the beginning of the offseason program.

The 34-year-old detailed his process and everything that went into his decision to continue playing during the offseason.

As he neared free agency for the first time in his career, Mack took everything into consideration once he decided to continue playing.

"Everything kind of played into it," Mack said. "Just want to know your value, want to know what you meant to the team or a team in general. Just trying to figure that out and then go from there in making the decision on where and when and how and all the different intangibles of who's here, who's there.

"We came to the conclusion that it was here," Mack added.

Why the Chargers?

Because of his trust in the people in front of it all.

"Why not here?" Mack said. "Got tremendous leadership here. You're about the players in the locker room, I was talking about that last year.

"Just knowing what you're stepping into, being very familiar with the guys that we have already here and knowing what Coach [Jim] Harbaugh is building and what Joe [Hortiz] is building," Mack added. "That was a no-brainer."

It went even further than just decision makers, too.

Mack's one season with Chargers Executive Director of Player Performance Ben Herbert was an impactful one, and one which the veteran said also helped his choice to return.

"Herb is a big deal. He was a big part of the decision coming back here as well," Mack said. "Just knowing the mindset he has and how he thinks about the body. It's the same approach and same mindset that I have when I train by myself or with anybody else.

"I want to be a machine, I want to be as solid as possible, be as strong as possible, move people easy," Mack continued. "This program is all of that and on top of that, Herb is a special dude. We're always talking about off-the-field stuff.

"It's funny how we relate to each other in so many different ways, being fathers, husbands and all those kind of things," Mack added. "You get in those kind of therapeutic conversations on top of the work out. It was one of those type of decisions with me."

And it was something that couldn't help but excite the team heading into another season with the future Hall of Famer.

Mack has been a key figure on the Bolts defense in his three seasons with the team, as well as one of the more experienced members of the club.

It's why the entire team was fired up for his return, as Chargers Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter summed up what it meant for the group.

"It means everything. He's one of the best to ever do it," Minter said. "Really, just the type of person he is, the type of leadership that he brings.

"We're super grateful he wanted to come back," Minter added. "That was really important that he wanted to be here and have another chance with this group. Just excited to have him back."

That's not even mentioning the amount he brings to the entire team as a leader.

Mack has long been lauded for his leadership presence since arriving with the squad, and his return has given the Bolts another boost in that department.

Minter spoke highly about the veteran for being in the building even before players reported for the offseason program in April, as his work ethic continues to set the tone.

"I remember — before the players got back on April 20 — I think it was early March or late February even when we started to see Khalil here on a regular basis. The work that he was putting in, the impact he had on other people to train at his level, was pretty incredible.

"For the young guys to have him around and putting in the work he's putting in and the way that he's doing it, it just makes everybody better," Minter added

The Chargers are where Mack wanted to be as he continues his journey to make it to the football mountaintop.

And both the goal and the work remains the same heading into Year 12.

"Having Heeb [Tarheeb Still] and all the other young guys around, just feeding off their energy and coming in and grinding," Mack said. "Putting my head down and grinding."

Mack later added: "I love the game of football and it's so much fun playing with these guys. That's what overtrumps all the other stuff."
